To describe what it's like to get a moog hangover, I doubt I can do. But I indeed can try at least to describe the
Keith Emerson concert of Saturday night and how it made us feel!
(I won't put this behind a cut, as the only reason I would have was for
prjt2501's benefit, but as I saw he responded to my sister's post, now the need is not there.)
My sister and I have liked ELP for such a long time now, and while she's seen them twice in her life, I've only seen them once and that was as an opening act for Jethro Tull in Camden back when that amphitheatre was called the E-Center. The thought of seeing anything as magical as the god of keyboards that Keith Emerson is ever again seemed such a foreign prospect. So when I found out that he was coming to Phoenixville, I told my sister right away and she got the tickets. They were general admission, and as I said in my last post, we ended up finding seats three rows back in the mezzanine section, dead center. Looking down at that stage and seeing all the equipment... not to mention the MOOG was so cool! I snapped a picture (which I've yet to download) hoping it would come out.
Because the start of the show had been so delayed by a puppet show in the afternoon, the band had to do a soundcheck with us all watching. That was fun, as they got people's opinions on whether something should be raised or lowered. Keith Emerson told a joke, which was something about a koala bear and a lizard getting high, and then they all left the stage asking us to act like we'd never seen them before when they came back out.
Nine o'clock - Keith Emerson and band take the stage - we all clap and cheer!
Karn Evil 9 begins, and a smile that was bigger than any I've had in ages appeared on my face and I looked at my sister in amazement.... for the thought of what this show would be had not even crossed my mind.
I in no way shape or form have a set list to replay here, but I do remember quite a few songs of the two hour twenty-five minute set... and just have to say Marc Bonilla did an amazing job on guitars and vocals! The song they played that was his (White Noise) was pretty different, and before that he'd told the story of how he met Keith. There was a re-worked Bob Dylan song in the mix, as well as a song KE had written after Hurricane Katrina, called New Orleans.
Oh memory, work, work... (ok I did write a bunch of these down on Sunday):
tarkus, bitches crystal (LOVED IT!), living sin (LOVED IT!!!!!), from the beginning (acoustic), piano concerto no 1, america, lucky man (liked the arrangement a lot!), hoedown, nutrocker, touch and go,
fanfare for the common man..... there was more of course. The time flew by and I was in such amazement.... just to take it all in.
We got out of the theatre and oh how the ears were ringing. One of the louder shows like the old days I guess! I don't think I've been to such a show in years, the way it affected me and made me just want to reclaim my love of prog which has been slightly waning over the years. I wish I'd been able to write a post for this show immediately, but at least there was that phone posting before I went to sleep Saturday night ;) We were all joking in the car about getting a moog hangover, and my sister had said the word "progadelic" which cracked me up.
But as she said, progtastic. That sums it up quite nicely, I'd say.
[gasp! I shall leave this post public, at least for a while.]
