Before I left for Japan, I had in the back of my mind the idea that it will be difficult living in a foreign country with people that speak a different language. You havent been there very long! I am sure you will be more comfortable with speaking as time goes on. You have months left to learn and classes have barely started.

have you met your speaking partner yet? are you in a house or apartment? hows the home cooking?

you promised to be better than me about photos!

stay well, you are wonderful and brave!

Yeah man, don't worry. You've got a few months left there. You'll be learning a lot about the language without even knowing it...I wouldn't be surprised if you're fluent by the time you return.

Just remember: "Ita?"

Don't lose hope Justice. You've only been there a couple of weeks. It'll take time to finally feel at home, but I'm confident you'll be able to have better conversations in no time. :)

Don't worry Justice! We all believe in you! And I don't mean the Santa and Easter Bunny Believe, or even the Superman "You'll Believe a Man Can Fly" Believe, but I do mean the "Justice we believe you are going to succeed because you are just that awesome!" Believe.

Language barrier sounds familiar to me anonymous September 26 2006, 04:47:56 UTC
This reminds me of my first months here in the States. It was so frustrating not knowing enough words to express myself the way I wanted to. Although I've been acquainted with the language since I was five, I was not used to speak it. In the first six months, I remember how terrified I was whenever I talked, I was so afraid to say something wrong or that I wouldn't be understood. But as time passes by, it gets easier, trust me. The turning point was when I was able to think in English, that's when I realized I was bilingual. Well, I still make grammar errors when I talk, yet it's my fault from talking too fast. And of course, I still ask "how do you say blah blah blah?" or "what does blah blah blah means?" A LOT. Language barriers are tough but not invincible. I wish I could say more uplifting things. My only regret is that I couldn't write this earlier. I hope that when you read this, you feel better ( ... )
