I use both livejournal and Tumblr, and they seem to me like completely different-from-the-ground-up platforms built for totally different purposes. In particular, Tumblr is primarily for media sharing, not journaling. As always, there's usage bleed because you build community and want to share things -- I sometimes post long personal text on Tumblr, and I sometimes embed YouTube videos on livejournal -- but those are exceptions where you're bending the tool out of its intended use, not standard usage cases. Also, Tumblr is a notably lighter weight experience. When everything is going to shit in my world and I just want to turn my brain off and look at pictures of cats for a few minutes, I go to Tumblr. LiveJournal requires more from me as a participant, and I'm not always up for it.
