Chapter 22: Avoidance and Bracelet Crisis
“Hey, where are you?”
Junsu turned onto his side and stared at the wall. He was lying in what used to be Yoochun’s bed in Shirley’s house. “At Shirley’s.”
“Are you spending the night there?”
“I think so. It’s raining and it’s cold and I don’t feel very well,” Junsu said. Changmin was lying on his stomach with his laptop in front of him on the bed on the other side of the room and pulled up and eyebrow at him.
“You don’t sound sick and you were fine last night,” Yoochun said.
“Are you saying I’m lying?” Junsu asked and Changmin snorted.
“That’s exactly what I’m saying. So what’s really up? The truth now, please.”
“I’m not lying! You don’t trust me, do you?” Junsu tried to sound indignant, but failed.
“Not when you’re lying to me, you idiot. So either you tell me what’s wrong or I’m hanging up, how about that?”
“Yoochun, I…”
“Yeah?”
“I’ll talk to you later, Yoochun. Bye.” And Junsu hung up.
He turned around and saw Changmin staring at him. “What the hell did you do?”
“Nothing! I just don’t feel like walking through the rain and getting sicker…” Junsu mumbled.
“Liar. It has to be really bad for you to stay here with Jaejoong instead of at Yoochun’s place. Don’t tell me you were a whore again?”
“No. Shut up, I’m not a whore. If I tell you, you have to swear not to tell Yoochun ever,” Junsu said and sat up right. “I lost the bracelet he brought back for me from America and he even noticed before I did.”
“So? It’s just a bracelet. You’re making a big deal out of nothing,” Changmin shrugged and turned back to his computer.
“You don’t get it. None of you do.”
A whole 10 days. Junsu succeeded into avoiding Yoochun for a whole of ten days. In those ten days Junsu turned the whole city upside down. He went to Jaejoong’s parents house, he looked in Changmin’s mom’s car, he looked in Yunho’s dad’s garage, nothing.
He had to admit that he was never going to find it and he had to come clean and tell Yoochun the truth.
Junsu knew that Yoochun knew he was avoiding him and Junsu also knew it pissed him off to no end. The last two days Yoochun stopped calling. On the tenth day Junsu was about to call Yoochun and come clean, but was surprised to see Yoochun’s name appear on the screen before he had even gotten a chance to dial.
“Hey-”
“They want us over for diner tonight, so if you had plans, cancel them.”
“Who?”
“My mom, your mom.”
“Okay-”
“I have Yunho’s car, so I’ll pick you up at 7.” Yoochun hung up right after that and Junsu felt a pang at his heart at the lack of…warmth in Yoochun’s voice.
Yoochun arrived at ten past seven and when he rang the doorbell Junsu went downstairs instead of buzzing him up. What he saw, was absolutely not what he was expecting.
“You cut your hair again?” Junsu asked, reaching out to touch Yoochun’s new short locks.
“Seems like it,” Yoochun said and moved away.
Junsu retreated his had and looked down, more than a little hurt.
Yoochun stepped into Yunho’s car without saying another word and Junsu did the same.
“Why didn’t you tell me you were cutting your hair again?” Junsu finally said when they were out of Shirley’s street.
“I already told my mom we’re together so you can tell her why we’re not together anymore,” Yoochun said, not diverting his eyes from the road for a second. Junsu turned to look at him. “What?”
“You can tell her, because I honestly don’t know.”
“You don’t know what?”
“Why the hell you’ve backed out on me!” Yoochun snapped.
“Backed out on what? What are you talking about? Why are you so mad?”
“I’m mad. I’m pissed. I could fucking kill you.”
“But…why?” He didn’t know about the bracelet, did he?
“I bet you didn’t even take a second to think about how I’d feel when my boyfriend just disappears and comes with excuse after excuse why he can’t meet me. Especially since that boyfriend didn’t want to be with me in the first place. You should never had said yes if you were still having doubts.”
“I’m not having doubts about anything! And I have a reason for avoiding you, okay? If you think I was out having fun then you’re wrong! I went through fucking trashcans trying to find your stupid bracelets the whole week!”
“You were looking for my stupid bracelet? If it’s stupid then why look for it in the first place? And when did you even lose it? Didn‘t you say it was at Shirley‘s place?”
“No, that’s not what I meant…and I thought it was there but…”
“You’re lying.”
“I just know that bracelet meant a lot to you because it was from your brother and all, so I just wanted to find it. I didn’t want to disappoint you with my stupid.”
“What does it mean to you?”
“What?”
“Okay, so the bracelet means a lot to me, but what does it mean to you?”
“If it means a lot to you, then it means a lot to me.”
“…Why didn’t you just tell me you lost it?”
“Because this was going to happen!” Junsu squeaked and motioned between the two of them. “And we just started dating. We can’t handle this now.”
“And you thought not seeing each other for ten days was a good thing for our relationship?”
“Yoochun, I’m really sorry, okay? You know it was hell for me too and you know I wouldn’t have done it if I wasn’t scared you’d …you know…cry and stuff.”
Yoochun refused to look at him and Junsu knew. He knew that he was holding it in.
“I’m sorry,” he said again. “You believe that right?”
“It still hurts.”
Junsu reached over and buried his fingers in Yoochun’s freshly cut hair. “You could have texted me, before cutting your hair.”
“You could have texted me before disappearing out of my life.”
“I love you.”
“That’s what they all say.”
“Are there other people confessing their love to you, I don’t know of?”
“Shut up, weirdo. We’re here.”
Junsu looked out of the window and saw his parents’ house and Kangta’s car parked right outside.
“So why did they invite us over again?” he asked.
“Oh, we’re coming out to Kangta. He’s the only one who doesn’t know about all the gayness that’s going on.”
“Ah…”
“Come on,” Yoochun said and stepped out of the car. Junsu followed him and walking up the drive way Junsu grabbed a hold of Yoochun’s hand. He didn’t pull away and Junsu saw that as a chance to get on Yoochun’s good side again, so when they reached the front door, he slid his arms into Yoochun’s open coat and pushed their bodies flush together. “I missed you,” Junsu said before leaning in and capturing Yoochun’s lips in a much needed kiss. After ten days of not seeing each other, let alone touching each other, it wasn’t a surprise they stood there for over a minute in a liplock. It wasn’t until a loud ‘AHEM’ made them look up.
“Would you look at that. Two gay boys making out on my doorstep. Must be my lucky day.”
“Dad!” Junsu squeaked, face turning redder than Yoochun had ever seen it.
Yoochun looked down, so that Mister Kim wouldn’t see him laughing, when his eyes crossed Mister Kim’s wrist.
“Hey…isn’t that your bracelet?”
