A/N: Aish failed summary there. I’ve been feeling really depressed lately, so that’s what led me to write my first angst fic, which I’m probably gonna fail at.

Sungmin just stood there, letting the harsh rain water pelt him like icy stones. His pink hoodie did nothing to keep him dry, but that was the last thing on his mind.

He couldn’t hear the loud rain nor the howling wind. All he could hear was his voice, the voice that made his heart skip a beat, but now it was eating away at his heart. The pain was unbearable, but Sungmin couldn’t pull himself away from it.

More dark clouds started to move in as the wind picked up speed, biting and stinging his cold wets cheeks, stained by both rainwater and his own tears. His cheeks hurt, and so did his eyes from countless sleepness nights that he had spent, spilling tears that he kept telling himself not to cry anymore.

But the more he told himself that, the more tears kept falling, and they would fall until his eyes were as dry as a desert and as red as his own blood. However, he couldn’t feel the pain, he couldn’t feel any type of pain at all, except for the one that was inside of him.

He didn’t want to believe them - his hyungs and dongsaengs - who kept apologizing to him over the loss, nor did he want to believe the words that had been etched onto the slab of stone that he couldn’t tear his eyes away from.

Cho Kyuhyun.

Cho Kyuhyun, the name he wanted to call out to, but would never get an answer from.

February 3, 1988 - April 19, 2007.

The two months of the year that he wanted to disappear.

Beloved son, singer, friend & lover.

He could never pull himself to say the last word at the end.

The wind picked up speed again, this time pushing Sungmin in the direction of the dorm, but his feet were planted into the soggy grass, not wanting to move.

“How can I go back? There’s no point anymore,” Sungmin said to himself. The wind seemed to have heard his words, and pushed at him with more force.

"I don't want to go back! Not without you!" he screamed at the sky.

The wind must have been furious by now, so it sent another powerful gust at him, this time almost knocking the small man over.

“Ok I got it! I’ll go now!” he yelled out, yanking his feet free of the muddy ground beneath him.

The walk back to the dorm only took him fifteen minutes, but Sungmin wished it had taken him longer. When he arrived at the dorm, everything happened in a blur. He didn’t hear Leeteuk screaming at him for staying out in the rain for a hour, nor did he remember Ryeowook removing his wet clothes from him. However, he did vaguely remember trying to stop him from taking away his most precious item - the one thing that allowed him to hear the voice, his voice.

He couldn’t recall the warmth of the bowl of ramen that was set for him, but he did remember how it tasted. It was cooked perfectly, with the right amount of water to get the noodles to the right consistency, yet that was the reason why it tasted so wrong. The ramen he remembered eating tasted bland, and the noodles were awfully soggy. No, this wasn’t his perfect bowl of ramen at all.

The only moment in time that Sungmin actually paid attention that day was their room, no his room, since it only had one occupant now.

He walked over to his desk, where his laptop was still in its exact spot, the same spot it had been since the night he knew that his life no longer had any meaning to it.

--------Flashback--------

He remembered that night like it was yesterday. Donghae receiving a call from Eunhyuk, stating that he, Leeteuk, Shindong, Kyuhyun and their two managers had been in a serious accident. Time seemed to have stood still, as everyone was frozen in shock and disbelief. Then, like a fast forward button had been pressed, everything was a blur. Donghae and Heechul frantically screaming into their phones, Yesung comforting a crying Ryeowook, Siwon and Hankyung had their eyes on the news, which were now broadcasting the scene of the accident, and himself, unable to register in his head what had just happened. He remembered taking out his phone, dialing Kyuhyun’s number and holding the phone to his ear, praying that he would be able to pick it up.

“The customer you are calling is unavailable at the moment. Please try again later,” was the answer he was given.

He remembered waiting alongside the other members as a exhausted Kangin came through the door, his eyes filled with a bottomless sorrow.

“Well?” asked Heechul.

“How are they?” followed Hankyung.

“Eunhyuk, Shindong and the manager-hyungs are all fine, they had some minor injuries,” replied Kangin.

“And Leeteuk and Kyuhyun?” questioned Siwon.

“Leeteuk-hyung requires 170 stiches for his injuries, with most of them being above his right eye, but Kyuhyun,” Kangin started.

“Kyuhyun what?” piped Ryeowook.

“Is he going to be alright?” added Yesung.

Kangin rubbed his eyes, trying not to let his tears fall as he made his way over to Sungmin, taking his hands and looking at him with his bloodshot eyes. Sungmin could only pray to himself that Kangin’s answer wasn’t the answer he was expecting.

“I’m…I’m…I’m sorry Sungmin. The doctors tried their best…they tried every method that was possible but…but…but…”

“But…but what?” asked Sungmin, his voice beginning to crack.

“Kyu, he…he…he didn’t make it.”

Then, all he could remember was that the world plunged into perpetual darkness.

-------Present--------

Sungmin felt really tired now, since he hadn’t been able to sleep for weeks now. He crawled onto his bed and pulled the pink covers over his head. He closed his eyes and did his best to relax, but all he did was toss and turn, like he had been doing every night.

Frustrated, he sat up in his bed, putting his head in his arms, a mixture of negative emotions flying around in his head. When he looked up, his eyes came upon the second bed in his room - the bed that would now forever remain empty.

Sungmin didn’t even notice his own feet carrying him over to the empty bed, but when he laid his head down on the soft pillow, he was met with a feeling of ease and calmness, emtions he hadn’t felt for so long. Then again, after he left, the only thing he felt was pain and a never ending stream of sadness.

He turned his head so that his nose met the pillow’s surface, and inhaled his sweet scent.

“It still smells like you too,” he whispered to himself. Sungmin then turned up the volume on his voice, and let it lull him to sleep.

He sounds even more beautiful in my sleep, thought Sungmin.

It’s like he’s still here with me.

“Minnie hyung…”

Ok maybe now I’m going insane.

“Hyung wake up!”

Sungmin’s eyes opened, in utter shock of the sight that greeted him.

“K…K…Kyu?” he stuttered. Sungmin couldn’t believe what he was seeing - the black hair, the dark chocolate brown eyes, the chiseled jawline and the full lips, curved up in a smug smile - were all in front of him.

“Well who else could it be?” asked Kyuhyun smugly, kissing Sungmin’s forehead as he crawled into his bed, wrapping an arm around the smaller man’s waist.

“But…you…it’s not… possible…how?” Sungmin asked, turning so he was facing his suppose-to-be-deceased boyfriend.

Kyuhyun smiled at him genuinely, then let his hand run through Sungmin’s silky brown hair. Sungmin closed his eyes, sighing and  taking in the gentle pleasurable feeling that he had longed for.

“I can’t leave you Minnie, not yet. I have to see you one last time before I -“ Kyuhyun suddenly stoppped.

“Before you what?” questioned Sungmin, a hint of worry in his voice.

“Before I move on to the other side,” answered Kyuhyun sadly, not meeting Sungmin’s eyes.

“Oh,” was all Sungmin could muster up.

“Don’t worry though, we still have time left. Is there anything you want before I leave?” asked Kyuhyun, hugging Sungmin closer to him, not wanting to waste any time.

“Umm, well there is one thing,” Sungmin replied in his best aegyo voice. He didn’t even notice his own aegyo, since he had stopped using it on everyone else.

“What is that?” Kyuhyun asked, trying to mimic his hyung’s aegyo.

“Leave the aegyo to me ok?” Sungmin giggled at the younger’s voice.

“Hey you can’t hog it all to yourself,” Kyuhyun replied with a laugh, pinching his hyung’s cheeks.

“Hey stop that!”

“I can’t help it, you look so cute!”

“Ok ok, what I want from you is for you to sing to me,” answered Sungmin.

“Sing to you?” Kyuhyun asked, arching his eyebrows.

“Yes please!”

“Ok what song?”

“Mmm…Can you sing ‘Smile’? I’ve always loved that song.”

“Anything for you love.”

Sungmin smiled as he closed his eyes, resting his head on Kyuhyun’s chest, taking in his alluring, angelic voice.

I know I’m dreaming, yet why does it seem so real? Either way, I should enjoy it for now, cuz it’s not going to last forever, Sungmin told himself.

Kyuhyun sang his last line just in time to see Sungmin doze off. He couldn’t help but stare at the beautiful sight before him. From his milky white skin to his pink, heart-shaped lips, Sungmin was perfect in every single way, and it pained him that this would be the last time he’ll ever have the most beautiful person in the world asleep in his arms.

Kyuhyun turned to look out the window. It was still dark outside, with the full moon shining brightly, bathing everything in a pure, white light.

How I wish the night could last forever, he thought to himself as he hugged Sungmin tighter, not wanting to let go of him even for a minute.

Meanwhile, Sungmin dreamt of nothing but him and Kyuhyun that night. The dreams were all of his memories with him, from the day Kyuhyun confessed to him during a concert, to the carnival where Kyuhyun spent half his money trying to win him a gigantic pink bunny plushie, to Kyuhyun’s failed attempt at making ramen, to the night they explored each other’s bodies underneath the covers. Sungmin hadn’t had a good dream in weeks, and he wanted this one to last forever. He wanted this moment to last forever, him asleep in the arms of an angel, his angel, his Kyu. The Kyu who had made him smile, laugh, pout, and made him feel whole. He was the missing puzzle piece that completed the puzzle of his life.

Unfortunately, he was going to lose one piece, and once it’s gone, it can never be seen again.

Or, that’s what’s they always say.

It felt like he had been sleeping for an eternity, until a familiar voice woke him up.

“Sungmin hyung…”

He didn’t want to wake up, because he knew what would happen if he did.

“Minnie…”

He can’t leave yet, I’m not ready for this, I don’t want to feel the pain again, Sungmin told himself.

“Minnie please wake up!”

His eyes decided to betray him then, as they opened and met Kyuhyun’s sad brown eyes.

“Kyu, what’s wrong?” Sungmin asked in a sleepy voice.

Kyuhyun turned his head towards the window. The sky was now glowing a faint pink, which meant his time was almost up.

“It’s almost sunrise,” he stated, not meeting Sungmin’s confused face.

“What happens at sunrise?” Sungmin couldn’t help but feel a little pain in his heart, for he knew what was going to happen now.

“I…I have to leave you Minnie, to move on to the next life,” answered Kyuhyun gravely.

“But…but…shouldn’t you have moved on weeks ago? Why did you stay here for so long?” Sungmin was on the verge of tears.

“Because…I couldn’t leave you without saying goodbye.”

Sungmin couldn’t help it any longer; he let his tears fall once again. Kyuhyun couldn’t bear to see him in pain; it hurt him so much, even though his heart was no longer beating. He cupped Sungmin’s cheeks in his hands so that he was staring into his tear-filled eyes. Moving his face closer, he pressed his lips against Sungmin’s, tasting his strawberry-flavoured lips mixed with the saltiness of his tears. Sungmin responded by kissing his back, not wanting to waste the last few minutes Kyuhyun had left on Earth.

It felt like hours had past before Kyuhyun broke the kiss. The sun’s rays were starting to peep over the horizon, and it won’t be long before he had leave Sungmin forever.

“I have to go now Minnie, otherwise I can’t pass on,” Kyuhyun replied sadly, pulling the smaller man into his last embrace.

“Can’t you just stay here? Then we can be together forever.”

“But I’ll be nothing more than a lost soul, wandering the Earth trying to enter the next life after I missed my chance. Is that what you want for me?” Kyuhyun questioned his lover.

“Well…I…You…No of course not,” Sungmin answered with agony. He didn’t want Kyu to leave him, but it would selfish and cruel of him to force him to stay. Sungmin knew what the right thing was for him to do, even though it would break his heart.

Kyuhyun heard the sadness in Sungmin’s voice, but he had to let go of him.

“Before I leave though, you have to promise me one thing.”

“Anything for you Kyu.”

“Promise me you’ll live a long, happy and healthy life. I know I won’t be there with you, but remember my dear Sungmin, I’ll always be watching over you, until the day we can be together again. Until then, you have to live a long life. I won’t be able to bear it if I see you on the other side too soon,” Kyuhyun stated.

He held his pinky out, and Sungmin hooked his pinky around Kyuhyun’s tightly.

“I promise,” answered Sungmin, his voice beginning to crack.

Kyuhyun hugged Sungmin tightly one last time before he let go of him, and walked towards the growing light of the sun. He turned around one last time to see Sungmin’s tear-stained face smile at him, and he couldn’t help but smile back. Then, he advanced forward, the light of the sun getting brighter and brighter as he got closer, until the whole room was bathed in a bright yellow glow. Sungmin shielded his eyes from the piercing light, but he managed to catch a glimpse of Kyuhyun stepping into the light, and when he did, the light got too bright that Sungmin had to close his eyes and…

He woke up, sitting straight up in his bed, in utter shock of what had just happened.

“I must have been dreaming,” Sungmin told himself as he examined his room. It was still occupied by only one man, which made almost made Sungmin give up on his meeting with Kyuhyun last night. He was about to cry again when he noticed a little pink paper taped on the screen of Kyuhyun’s laptop. He walked over to it, took the note off the screen, and was in awe of what the note said.

Promise me.

C. KH

Sungmin held the note to his heart and smiled, letting his tears fall once again, but this time they were tears of happiness. His head turned towards the window, where the dark grey sky had been replaced with one that glowed a bright sapphire blue. He knew what he had to do from then on.

“I promise,” he whispered happily.
