“Move.” Sungmin spoke, glaring at the blonde man blocking his way out of the club, who only smirked at his obvious annoyance.

“What’s the rush? It’s too early to go home.”

Sungmin’s glare intensified, “Shut up. Whether it’s too early or not is something for me to decide.”

Eunhyuk, the blonde guy blocking his way, laughed a bit before changing his expression into one of… worry? concern? “It will only get harder you know.” He paused for a moment, seemingly studying Sungmin’s passive expression, “And while there’s still time, you might as well get used to it, bit by bit. Running away when it becomes too much will only make it harder for you to adapt when it comes full force.”

Sungmin’s expression remained indifferent even after Eunhyuk’s monologue. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” With that, he went on his way, ignoring the pair of eyes that followed his every move.

---

Sungmin sighed as he laid on his bed. Everything is starting to become too much (and too strange) for him, and that blonde guy is only making it worse. He met him about a month ago when he brought his cat to the veterinarian. But these unusual conditions began months before they met.

It started almost instantly. No preceding hints, signs or symptoms that something is about to happen to him. He literally just woke up one morning with one hell of a headache and a continuous wave of mumbled voices drowning his ears. He took some pills, thinking that it’s something temporary, probably the result of too much studying.

And after few minutes, it did go away, only to come back when he reached their dining room. The headache did lessen, but those unrecognizable mumblings got louder. It’s not unbearable, yet still quite bothersome.

He sat beside his Mother, ignoring the sensation he felt when she touched his arm. It was, well, it was quite shocking to say the least. The strange mumblings turned into actual words, and the voice became recognizable- his Mother’s.

At that moment, he thought that he’s either in a dream or actually really sick. Hearing voices, hearing someone speak when they’re not actually speaking is just too unbelievable to comprehend. So he did the first thought that came to his mind, he excused himself and ran back to his room, his Mother’s voice turning back into a soft, unrecognizable noise as she let go of his arm.

He laid in his bed, taking in slow, deep breaths. He just woke up and he’s already so exhausted. He dismissed any thoughts about the seminars he needs to attend later that day, letting his self go back to sleep, hoping that when he wakes up, all of these will disappear.

Well, to make the long story short, it didn’t disappear. Not after he went to sleep. Not after days, weeks and months passed by. In fact, it actually got worse.

The volume of the mumblings increase when more people are present in the room. He realized this when he went to school after he woke up. It was still quite bearable, but it made it very hard to focus on the voice of their teacher.

Also, every time someone (anyone) touches him, the mumblings turn into easily recognizable words. It actually took him, as much as he hates to admit it, a couple of days before he realized that those words were not hallucinations but actual thoughts that sometimes clash with one another when he accidentally gets in contact with two or more individuals.

But after a couple of months, the mumblings completely disappeared as, even if he does not touch a specific person, he could clearly hear their thoughts just by being near. Though it is almost impossible to understand anything when so many people are present.

Still, what makes everything much worse than it already is, is the fact that some of those thoughts are much better of unheard. It practically destroyed his social life. He started avoiding his friends, his classmates, everyone, unless it’s a situation which he can’t escape.

He feels so isolated. So he did what he could and got the next best thing to a friend- a pet. Fortunately, this mind-reading-thing doesn’t work on animals.

He got a white kitten. It did lessen his loneliness, even if it’s just a bit. And it was during one of his occasional trips to the veterinarian with his cat that he met Eunhyuk.

He entered the clinic and bowed to the receptionist, ignoring her thoughts about wanting to go and find a job that doesn’t include animals. He sat on an empty bench, next to a blonde man with a dog. He greeted him with an almost cheerful “Hi” only to get a shocked expression in response.

Sungmin couldn’t hide his discomfort as the man only kept on staring at him. He was about to ask him if there’s anything wrong when it hit him.

He couldn’t hear the man’s thoughts.

And just like always, he did the first thing that popped in his head- he ran away. But he wasn’t able to fully escape as a couple of days later, he opened the door to a grinning man with blonde hair.

In instinct, he slammed the door without saying anything. His life is crazy enough as it is, he doesn’t need to add anything that will make it even more unbearable (which, even if he doesn’t know why, he feels that associating with the blonde guy will do).

Unfortunately, Eunhyuk, the blonde guy’s name which he found out from the text messages he received (how that man discovered his number is beyond him), is quite persistent. He never stopped trying to talk to Sungmin, who, on the other hand, never stopped trying to avoid him. And that encounter on the club is just one of the many.

He wanted to hit his self for even going to that party. He should’ve known how it will turn out. The loud music, mixed in with a hundred clashing thoughts, is a really bad combination. What made it much worse are those that spring from people’s mind when they saw him.

Sungmin let out a loud sigh. He just wants his life back. He doesn’t want this ability. He doesn’t want to know how two-faced everyone actually is. He doesn’t like feeling too different.

---

Sungmin groaned as he saw Eunhyuk outside their door. “What do you want?”

Eunhyuk grinned, ignoring the foul mood the other is obviously in, “I was just passing by when I suddenly thought of visiting you.”

Sungmin scoffed, “As if.”

“Well, are you going to let me in?” Eunhyuk asked, knowing what the answer will be. Still, it wouldn’t really hurt to try.

Sungmin sighed. This has been going on for too long now. Maybe if he finally talk to him, he’ll finally leave him alone. “Fine. Come in.” Without waiting for a reply, he walked back inside the house.

To say Eunhyuk was surprised would be an understatement. After so long, it seems like he’ll finally get the ‘talk’ he wants. He hurriedly followed Sungmin inside, not wanting to risk the chances of him changing his mind.

Eunhyuk looked around before sitting on the sofa beside Sungmin, “Where are your parents?”

“Out.”

“Have you told them about ‘it’?”

“No.”

“Are you planning to?”

Sungmin didn’t answer instantly. He stayed quiet seemingly thinking about it.

“Don’t.” Eunhyuk answered for him, noticing how the other actually seems to be considering it.

Sungmin turned to him, “What?”

Eunhyuk looked at him, “Don’t do it. Don’t tell them.”

“Why?” Sungmin asked, frowning at the other’s statement. When he woke up this morning, he thought about the next steps that he could take to try and lessen the heavy feelings this ability is causing him. And after an hour, the only thing he thought of is to tell his parents and well, go from there.

“Because they won’t believe you.”

“What makes you so sure that they won’t? They’re my parents-”

Eunhyuk cut him off, “-who wouldn’t understand what you’re going through.”

Sungmin turned away, “And you would?”

“Yeah.” Eunhyuk answered without hesitation.

“Don’t delude yourself.” Sungmin began, “Just because you’ve been stalking me for months doesn’t mean that you can understand me better than my parents can.”

Eunhyuk sighed, “I’m talking about your ability. Do you really think they’ll believe that you can hear people’s thoughts? Even more, try to understand how difficult it’s been?”

“Speaking of which, how did you know about ‘that’?” Sungmin asked, ignoring the other’s question.

Eunhyuk rolled his eyes, “Isn’t it obvious? Honestly, I thought you’d be smarter than this?”

Sungmin smacked his arm, “I’m seriou- Oh!” He stayed silent for a few minutes, wondering why he didn’t realize it sooner, “So that’s why I can’t hear your thoughts?”

“Yeah. I can’t hear yours, you can’t hear mine.”

“Is that why you’ve been wanting to talk to me? Because we’re sort of the same?”

Eunhyuk thought about it for a moment, asking his self the same question, “Honestly, I don’t really know why I wanted to talk to you. I guess I just got a bit excited that there’s finally someone I can talk to whose thoughts are, you know, quite private from me. It’s been such a long time since I had a conversation with someone like this.”

Sungmin smiled a little, “I guess I can understand.”

“And, if you don’t mind me asking, why have you been so desperate in avoiding me?”

“I just,” Sungmin sighed, “it’s been too much, too sudden- waking up one day, hearing people’s thoughts. I didn’t know how to deal with it. And when I’ve almost accepted it, I met you. I got used to hearing what’s on people’s mind, so when I met you, I guess, I sort of freaked out. It just felt like another huge change, and I don’t want to deal with it. Everything’s already too much.”

Eunhyuk gave him a sympathetic smile, “That’s why I’m here then.”

Sungmin blinked at him, “Huh?”

“I’ll help you deal with it.”

Sungmin stared at him, “I-Hmm… But I’ve already thought about that-“

“I told you.” Eunhyuk cut him off, “You’ll only make things more difficult if you tell your parents.”

“What makes you think that? You don’t know my parents.” Sungmin spoke, suddenly feeling annoyed.

Eunhyuk looked straight ahead, there was an unusual glint in his eyes that Sungmin can’t recognize, “I don’t. But I know people who don’t have our ability. And believe me, they’ll all have the same reaction if you tell them about it.”

“Still, they’re my par-“ Sungmin tried to reason out, only to be cut-off again by Eunhyuk.

“I don’t live with my parents anymore. I haven’t seen them in two years. I told them about this ability and they suddenly thought that I’m some kind of lunatic. It just got worse, so I left.”

Sungmin was shocked at Eunhyuk’s sudden statement, but he still didn’t feel convinced that he shouldn’t tell his parents. “I’m sorry about what happened to you. But I don’t- I don’t think that my parents will react the same way. I mean, you know, they’re my parents. When everything happened, I felt so different. It was only when I got home, when it’s only me and my parents that I don’t feel like an outcast. It’s only with them that I feel like I still belong.”

Eunhyuk looked at him with an unreadable expression on his face. “Here.” He handed Sungmin an envelope as he stood up.

Sungmin opened the envelope, pulling out a plane ticket? He turned back to Eunhyuk, a curious expression on his face.

“The flight’s tomorrow at noon. Think about it.” He didn’t let Sungmin respond as he head straight to the door.

---

Sungmin sat at the side of his bed, staring at the envelope Eunhyuk gave him. He wasn’t able to sleep well last night. The discussion that they had kept on haunting him.

He stood up, and slowly made his way to the dining room, where his parents already began eating. He sat on his usual seat, “Mom. Dad.” He suddenly blurted out, letting his instinct take over. It’s now or never.

“I have something to confess.” He nervously began, ignoring all the negative things that are popping out in his parents’ mind. “Just a few months ago, hmmm... something happened. I don’t know how. I-I don’t know why. It just happened.”

His parents looked at him with worried eyes. If it was in the past, looking like that, he would think that they were worried about him. But now, hearing their thoughts, his demeanor is slowly starting to crumble. They’re not worried about him. They’re worried about how the results of what happened (which they already assumed is something negative) will affect them. Not a single thought about him were present in their mind.

“I-“ Sungmin paused, finding it hard to continue speaking when he can see such concerned expressions but hear such dismaying thoughts. He briefly thought of Eunhyuk, the plane ticket and this ability before he stood up and excused his self to his room, ignoring the more panicked thoughts arising from his parents’ minds.

He headed straight to his bed and stared at the envelope lying on its side.

---

“Ice cream?”

Sungmin looked up at the grinning blonde holding out a cup of sundae. His emotions are in a rumble right now. He can feel his self wondering if what he’s doing is right, if running away from his parents’ home is the right choice to make. But right now, standing in front of this guy, he can feel his self finding comfort and reassurance amidst the hundred of thoughts seemingly trying to suffocate him.

He took the sundae with a soft smile. “Thanks.”

Eunhyuk stood beside him, “I honestly didn’t think you’d come.”

Sungmin smiled, “I didn’t either.”

“So you told them?”

“No.” Sungmin let out a bitter laugh, “I wasn’t able to take it. The difference between what’s inside and what's outside… I couldn’t take it. It was too much.”

“So you didn’t find out if they’ll accept your ability or not?”

“I don’t need to. It was already obvious anyway. I was just too much of a coward to admit it.”

“Ah.” Eunhyuk suddenly turned to him with a cheeky grin, “So I guess this means you’re stuck with me.”

Sungmin let out a hearty laugh, “Unfortunately.”
