That, ladies and gents, is a pyometra on a great dane. Her uterus was filled with approximately 5.1 POUNDS of pus. Yes, PUS. A collection of bacteria and dead white blood cells and proteins. It's delicious and nutritious and will certainly cause DEATH upon rupture. This does not happen to spayed animals, thank you very much.
Pardon me, I'm on a very frustrated kick at the moment with people being exceptionally dumb about their animals all around me. Sometimes it's understandable dumb, sometimes it's outright ludicrious, but there is dumb of the 'la la la, I can't/don't want to hear you!' variety and it is frustrating as all hell when I'm trying to come simply from a helpful standpoint.
