Your college should have an academic support unit. Go to them and get help in effective reading. Bro-tip: If you are reading word-for-word and cover-to-cover urdoinitrong.

I can gather enough information to write an essay with a couple of hours "reading".

Basically read introduction, then conclusion, then try to figure out the structure of the article/chapter (eg headings etc) and skim read to get the pertinent points. Write down a brief outline of the main points that you can refer to later. Congratulations you have now "read" enough to do academic work.

The idea is to absorb and retain the ideas, not how they are set down on paper.
