It must be a Southern thing, like iced tea. It's the only explanation I can think of for the continued preference expressed by so many people for Krispy Kreme doughnuts over Dunkin "The Clearly Superior" Donuts. I mean, seriously

Preach on. Krispy Kreme is not the pinnacle of doughnuthood. It's just wet sugar on puffy nothing, and it leaves teeth just covered in icky sugar fuzz. The best doughnuts ever have to be at the little doughnut shop just by my high school in Boise, IMO. Dunkin Donuts is a very close second.
(Phylum Cake is a bit higher on the doughnut tree than Filled, I'd say, but I suppose this is a point on which we can never agree. :) )

Krispy Kreme is the superior donut in all regards. It's light and fluffy and sweet and melts in the mouth. It is better hot -- as are many things -- but even cold, the crispness of the sugar coating makes a delightful contrast to the fluffy inside.
Dunkin does make a better filled donut, but really. Filled donuts? While they are tasty, they are not the pinacle of breakfast foods that a standard, classic donut is.
Although I agree with you that on a level playing field, I prefer Dunkin' Donuts.
However, on the unlevel playing field that is the Northern CA Bay Area, the nearest KK is 1 block from my house. The nearest Dunkin Donuts is at least more than 50 miles (since the Store Locator on the Dunkin Donuts site can't find one in that radius from my zip :)
