i dont think so. things are real and have form and weight... there's a difference between the big Meaning which isnt there, and the little meanings which is why we brush our teeth and sleep at night... imho
Emo, of course, is slang that postdates my experience with the archetype but as far as I can pick up it's meaning from my sons (marginally younger than you) it has nothing whatsoever to do with existential. So no, they are not the same thing at all.
Existential: Living in the present tense, without reference to past or present
Emo: Theatrical nihilism with a self-destructive edge
youre so particular about definitions! i won't go so far as to say you are wrong, but there's the emo which i think your sons are talking about, which is what you are mentioning... and there's the emo of which weezer was not authentic enough to represent back in 2002 or so. i mean emo more as in emotional as in where it originated with "emo" bands in which during the concerts emo kids would cry and how that all evolved into the super-hipster of today.... by existential i mean more in line with sartreanian/heidegger angst... maybe i just screw up meanings the way zizek does. terrible...
