Well, who could follow on from the excellent SHareCon reports so far and add anything useful? Here goes anyway…
My trip started last December when I had a health scare, and thought a distraction and something light was in order. I’d read such great things of the gatherings last October, and felt SHareCon would be just the tonic. Boy, was I right!
First stop was my brother and SILs place in San Francisco to settle in, drop off my large suitcase, pack into two smaller bags and fly down to LA. There I met with three other fans who were unable to make SHareCon. We had two wonderful days, with none of them meeting each other due to their own commitments. However, hopefully they can rectify that in the future.
Day 1 - Venice, Santa Monica
My first day in LA was spent with CP, whom many of you will know from LoveofMeandThee. We went to Venice Place, where we also saw the white church and railway line from Little Girl Lost, both of which are literally within yards of VP.
Next stop was Venice Beach and the Boardwalk, where I did an early reccy for t-shirts.
We walked around to the canals and found what I thought was the pontoon where H meets up with Kiko in Running - I had the right bridge over the right canal, but maybe not the right pontoon. Anyway, the houses are so varied along the canals.
The canals are lovely, with a variety of houses from the original workman’s cottages (a la Hutch’s cottage from the series) to modern-day two storey dog boxes (as I call them).
We walked to back Venice Beach, where we enjoyed a delicious lunch and some eye candy at Danny's Venice Deli (more like a restaurant) off the Boardwalk, where the arches are you see in several episodes, including Silence (think of Hutch walking alongside the Torino, and where Larry slips down the alleyway). This is a great corner for architecture.
Back to the car, and as it was parked near VP we had another lookie there, before heading north to Santa Monica.
The Miramar Hotel was one I’d considered booking into, and now that I’ve been there, it’s probably just as well I didn’t. I suspect they have a dress code! Eventually we got up the courage to walk through, but couldn’t find the horseshoe booths to see if Starsky’s wallet was still there. Helpful girls we are, we’d have hunted Starsk down and offered it back to him (you know how it is). We were out of there before security noticed us, then over the road to admire the lovely beachside scenery, but not before taking a few photos of the footpath where Hutch shot Starsky with a blank.
Without dragging out the episode, I can't remember if this happened on the hotel side of the street, or beach side, but we did find plenty of potential bullet holes in the sidewalk!
CP and I bid our sad farewells after a fantastic day and dinner together.
We had such a ball - I can see if we lived in the same country we’d be in each others’ pockets all the time!
Oh! My t-shirts! How could I forget?! I bought three for not-very-much, of which these are my two faves. My world famous (okay, SHareCon famous) alligators t-shirt, and what I call my "Targets Without a Badge" t-shirt.
