For those of you who are not primarily fan-oriented, there is both hue and cry at the moment over LJ's recent summary execution of several fan journals.
I've been slow to get riled about this one -- perhaps just because I'm ornery and if everyone else is running around shrieking then that usually makes me more inclined to suck on my pipe and go "hmmmm."
A part of my resistance to rage has been that so much of the tenor of the discussion, and indeed so many of the discussors, remind me of arguments about my old nemesis, fandom_wank. Rage! Fury! No one shall interfere with my fun -- I don't give a damn who gets hurt, as long as I am sufficiently amused. Let me show you my First Amendment rights that entitle me to be callous about harm that my work may cause.
But AQ has convinced me that there's a lot more to it than that with this issue. I think LJ indeed has behaved very badly towards its customers, and I don't feel great about supporting them.
I'll be keeping this journal for non-fandomy things, but fandom things will likely move to somewhere more fandom-friendly. A lot of people seem to be moving over to insanejournal, but I dunno, I don't like the conceit. I imagine I'll settle wherever most of the people I want to follow settle, though, which may yet be IJ.
Gosh, I guess I didn't actually say anything in this post. Just felt the need to weigh in, I guess, since about two-thirds of my flist is knotted up about this.
