Amen. It's his complexities that make him interesting. I loved how Tom Hiddleston described him as always destined to cross and recross the line because he will always fall. I love that his desires and his very being don't allow him to be anything but himself. Mischief, lies, chaos...he serves his own purposes and the way those goals align may be good or bad for Thor, Asgard, the world. I love that despite all of that I can still understand some of why. But at the same time I think a lot of the fandom is forgetting his origins as one of the most prominent gods of Norse mythology and the quintessential trickster of Western mythology. He is not a puppet easily used. When he does things it is on his own head and he wouldn't expect any less

I don't want a redemption arc, per se, because I don't think Loki would ever want to be redeemed, but I would love to see them explore the grey areas of him and his relationship with Thor even more. Have him both betray and then save Thor because it's totally something he would do. And through it all, remember that, in the end, Thor always forgives him. He may punish him, treat him badly, and rage, but he'll always forgive him.
Yeah in the actual movies I like the idea of slight temporary reconciliation not redemption but I am a sucker for fanfic redemption stories so long as they aren't shallowly characterized. We all have our things. :D
For fanfic, I'll read redemption and generally enjoy it if he and Thor are written well, so long as it's not along the lines of Loki suddenly realizing how wonderful and pure and good the world is because Thor loves him. It just doesn't work that way lol
I can definitely see internalized racism with him learning he's a frost giant, which no doubt is large chunk of why he goes so ballistic at learning the truth. It's present in the comics to a point to, even though he's always known he was at least part frost giant and adopted - he views them as lesser beings and Laufey was portrayed as a fairly abusive parent. (and all of Marvel's depictions of frost giants always make you go bwuh if you know the myths, because frost giant women were considered the most beautiful of all, part of the reason why the Aesir were always off having sex with them, and as the Jotun were an older race, they were seen as wise and crafty. The Aesir still hated them, but they were also horribly attracted to them. Pretty special)
In a way, the Avengers is Loki having the most spectacular temper tantrum I've ever seen, as all of it is fueled by a very childlike, selfish need for attention and validation.
I completely agree to this! Loki isn't a woobie at all and Thors hugs and love do not make things better (even though, yeah, underneath it all he does love Thor). Everything he does contradicts eachother. But he's always in it for himself, at least thats how I see it .
I still haven't read the comics, though... Thing does not download and its a dead torrent now. I ordered the books now :) impatient Mari is impatient
Buu to the download not working! Well, getting the comments is also good. I much prefer having the books on hand to read cause I hate reading them on my computer.
I guess you meant the comics instead of comments? ^^
Lol, I feel such a bandwagoner to only started to like Loki after seeing the Avengers... And now I'm just...wanting to know more about this fabulous bastard
Can I just say how much I love your comment about Loki judging people through his own filter? Because it's so true, and it comes up again and again. Loki's mind will twist things and words to fit his own concepts, and being who he is, full of ulterior motives and distrustful of others, it in turn makes him incapable to accept simple truths the way they are. It's the main reason why fics depicting Odin as a cruel and mean asshat irk me so bloody much. From what I gather (mostly from the movies), the guy may not qualify for Best Dad Ever(TM), he is clearly manipulative and harsh, but he is also shown to be well-meaning and wise. He is also basically the one person I can see outsmarting Loki any day. Because unlike our favourite Avengers, he knows Loki as only a parent can know their child

If it's solely a movie verse fic, I'll side eye Odin being an evil douchebag because he's really not. Harsh, yes, made some serious mistakes, yes, manipulative, yes, but Anthony Hopkins Odin is NOTHING on the utter nastiness that is comics Odin, who treats Loki AND Thor like shit most of the time. And really, even myth Odin is a very difficult character to get a grasp on. He's the Allfather, but it's definitely not a nurturing role, more feared than loved because of his wisdom and power, and this is the god who murders one of Loki's innocent children to bind him with said child's entrails
( ... )
Certainly. I meant that only for MCU verses, because that's like, the most convenient way of shifting the blame from Loki to Odin, and ruins both characters.
TBH, sometimes I just want to grab Loki and shake some sense into him exactly for that reason. LOL
To me it generates a really interesting dynamic where Loki is a willing but doubtful and sometimes even remorseful engineer of his own descent. It's quite tragic.
