this is just like one of those exercises they give to students of Zen.

I've got to clean about 16kg of sand. oh. brother.

put about a pound of playsand in bucket.
swish water in.
empty water.
repeat until water runs clean.
put clean sand in large bucket.
repeat.

Sand... clean... confused.... isn't sand dirty by defination? I mean, it's a different kind of dirt, no?

um, actually no, sand isn't actually inherently dirty, it's a silicate, tiny bits of quartz and other stuff. You can wash sand and get rid of the clays, organic stuff and whatever else might be in there so that just the sand remains and the water actually runs clear. You can't wash dirt/earth the same way, you'd end up with mud... and eventually an empty bucket!
