We're all going to Kingston tomorrow. It's dh's b-day and he wanted to go somewhere but we can't go for long because of all the animals and we can't do something wild, spontaneous & extravagant like fly somewhere for the weekend because the bank account is relatively empty. So... Kingston it is. [shrug ( Read more... )

You can search the Attractions Ontario website for Kingston, and see what comes up. they have some discount coupons available for some attractions as well, if you're looking for a deal.

Heh. I don't do much when I'm there because I'm spending time with my family, and anyways public transit is crap. ^^; I have to think about this.

Fort Henry itself has ghost tours. Their website says 'most nights'.

The Kingston centre of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada has a public stargazing session on Saturday night at the Queen's University observatory.

I think Kingston is a pretty geeky place for tourism -- it's all history and universities and theatre. There's at least one amusement park, Kingston Family Funworld, but I remember it being a bit scuzzy.

Other than that, shopping isn't bad... downtown tends to be touristy, but the Cataraqui Town Centre is a decent mall uptown. There's also a big RioCan outlet plaza. If you need to get into some air conditioning but you don't want to be stuck in the hotel, those are good places.

Food-wise -- my two favourite restaurants in Kingston are Saigon Delights (cheap and Vietnamese) and Darbar (Indian and a bit pricier, but still very reasonable), which are both located ( ... )

I don't think so, although it's probably worth calling ahead to double-check. There's an email link on that page, and a phone number.

Ooh yes. They're good. I seem to recall the prices are on par with something like Kelsey's, but the food is much better (since it isn't a chain).

Any suggestions of other fun stuff to do in Kingston? If I don't have specific plans the kids tend to gravitate to internet cafes so ideas for 13-17yr olds appreciated! The kids rolled their eyes when I suggested actually going into Fort Henry btw, so you see what I'm up against. lol.

See, my brother and I went to Kingston with my parents when we were teens and we LOVED Fort Henry. I got to look at all the nice guys dressed up in their uniforms and my brother was fascinated with the whole fort thing. And we both enjoy history.

btw, did you know that they've got girls dressed up as soldiers now? All of the reenactors in the area are completely disgusted. The girls got hired on the basis of "hiring equality" but there have been complaints that it's ridiculous, you look down the line of soldiers and the girls' "bums" (was the word that was actually used, though "figures" is the one that I'd use) stick out a mile.
lol
