I don't know that every fear hides a wish ... I for one, fear being attacked by bears.
That's so absurd about the heat lamps ... I remember that one of the theories beind "A Space Odyssey" concerned levels of civilisation, like Lv 1, Lv 2, Lv 3 ... Clarke predicted that by the time we were able to control the weather systems we would be a peaceable Lv 2 civilisation ... he seems to have underestimated our ability to ignore them altogether.
I saw a man walk past in shorts the other day and thought, 'is this some completely unexpected level of sophistication?' as I saw him walking away with his little hairy legs shivering.
A more accurate sci-fi novel would be a world dying of global warming where Angelina Jolie's babies still make the front pages. Why better reality, when we can advance fiction?
