It wasn’t friendship. It wasn’t brotherhood… It was just so that hopefully someday you’ll finally come to understand…

“Hyung.”

Hangeng felt a hand softly rested itself onto the small of his back as a figure sank down onto the side of his bed where he was curled up. The hand soothed over the creases on his shirt in a back and forth motion and Hangeng almost felt his sobs die away immediately at the instant comfort. That same familiar hand that had wiped away countless drops of tears he’d shed, gave him comfort, and had held his face so delicately in its palms.

He didn’t turn when the figure moved to lie in his bed behind him. Arms coming around to wrap themselves loosely at his waist and heat engulfed him as both men lay spoon fashion close together. Hangeng tried to calm his racing heart at the intimate moment as he laid a hand gently, just so gently, on the other’s to tell him that he appreciate this.

“Hae…”

“Shh. I’m here. Just go to sleep hyung.”

Hangeng felt himself comply with the soft order and fluttered his eyes shut. He felt the other shifted, moved closer as if it was possible, and gave him a light peck on his wet cheek. The tension in his body rolled away at the simple gesture. The sound of rhythmic breathing lulled him to sleep that night and he smiled in his dreams.

When will you start to understand?

“Donghae!”

Hangeng was shocked to find his best friend passed out on the floor in the living room one day. His whole body was burning.

“Oh god, you’re running high.” He spoke to the air as he lifted Donghae effortlessly into his arms. “Let’s get you to the hospital.”

~~~
“Hyung.”
Hangeng snapped his head up as he jerked awake from his light sleep when he heard the weak and almost inaudible familiar voice.
“Hae, how are you feeling? You’re having a high fever and the nurse had just given you a jab. Why didn’t you tell me you were sick? Why didn’t you see a doctor yourself when it just started? Why were you so stubborn to leave it like that? Why-“
Hangeng stopped when a soft chuckle escaped from his friend’s mouth.
“You sound like my grandma.”
Hangeng frowned. “And look at the person who turned me into one.” He leans forward and brushed at the hair that had fallen into Donghae’s eyes. Stopping short of his work, he looked down, smiling softly into his pale face.
The younger man blushes and lowered his lashes. “What?”
“…”
Then suddenly, Hangeng beamed. “Nothing,” He straightened and sat back in the chair by the bed. He bit his lower lip as he crossed his arms over his chest. “Just rest Hae. We can get you out by tomorrow.”
Do you understand by now?
Donghae pouts and frowns at the scene unfolding blatantly in front of him. A female colleague of theirs had a polished hand resting boldly on Hangeng’s shoulder. He could see that they’re all smiles and a giggle escaped the girl when Hangeng leaned forward to whisper something into her ear.
Donghae scowled at that and turned to stomp off, knocking into Eunhyuk, who had a freshly brewed cup of coffee in his hand.
“Aish!” Eunhyuk winced from the burning pain from the hot liquid and looked up at the wide eyed man before him, then down at his white tailored shirt and expensive dress pants. “Yah, Lee Donghae!”
“Oh my, I’m so sorry!” Donghae ran to grab something he could use to clean him up.
“Ah! What are you doing?!” Eunhyuk snatched the stack of paper in his friend’s hands and started wiping furiously at them. “I need this to clinch my new deal, Donghae-ah!”
Hearing that, Donghae made an expression that said, ‘Uh-oh, I am terribly sorry’, but Eunhyuk ignored him and went back to his desk to seemingly do up a new contract. He stopped suddenly to glare at Donghae before turning back to typing furiously at his keyboard.
Donghae sighed before he caught someone looking at him from the corner of his eye. He turned to meet the eyes of the one who was the cause of it all. Something flashed in those beautiful eyes and Donghae found himself tilting his head in confusion.
Hangeng smiled at the habit that his friend always has when he’s in confusion and got both brows raised at him in reply.
You still don’t understand…
“What happened today?”
“Huh?” Donghae turned his head from the movie he was watching to the person who had just sat beside him on the couch.
“Today, in the office… You looked out of sorts today. Did something happen?” Hangeng asked with pure concern pooling in his depths.
“…”
“Ah, it’s nothing.” Donghae laughed awkwardly and avoided the gaze that seemed to penetrate through his soul. He chose to look at the polished marble tiles of their living room instead, and never thought they looked cleaner than they ever did at the moment. He fears he might speak of something he knew the other would not like to hear if he continued looking into those beckoning orbs.
“Really?”
“Y-yeah,” Donghae forced his lips into a smile as he turns and looked at Hangeng. The minute he did what he did, he regretted it. The older man was looking at him so desperately Donghae felt his heart breaking.
“…”
“You’re definitely hiding something from me.” Hangeng’s lips quivered with unshed tears shimmering in his eyes. His nose reddened a little from the surge of emotions and his voice trembled with tension. He swallowed thickly before continuing. “You’re not having some illness are you? The high fever and this morning… You knocked into Eunhyuk, grabbed his contract instead of tissue to help clean him up-“
“Hyung!” Donghae grabbed Hangeng’s shoulders and shook him, bringing his focus back. “No, I’m not having any illness.”
Hangeng blinked with tears sliding down his cheeks uncontrollably. “H-huh?”
“I said I’m not having any illness.” Donghae looked intently at him. “So don’t worry, all right?”
“Okay,” Hangeng sniffled and settled back onto the couch, closing his eyes as he gave a sigh.
“I hope you understand.”
The familiar statement caught the younger man off guard as he jerked his head towards Hangeng. He had often mused to himself how he wished the other would understand his real intention whenever he did a certain something for him. It was never out of friendship, never out of convenience, only a few times out of kindness, but it was majority of the times, out of his love for him.
He loves Hangeng and hoped to heaven and earth everyday that someday he’ll come to understand. Now, hearing those words coming from his mouth had his heart beating wildly as he held his breath, waiting for more to come.
“I hope you understand why I’m always so paranoid when it comes to you.” Hangeng smiled his signature smile as he turned to gaze softly at Donghae.
Donghae felt his heart skipped a beat then. He stared at the older man and half hoped he was going to say what he thinks he’s going to say.
Hangeng sat back up and moved until both men were looking at each other. He shifted until their knees connected and Donghae felt his heart beats faster. He likes exercising but he was sure his heart had never pumped this forcefully before.
“It’s because I love you.” Hangeng almost whispered and his eyes twinkled. “Not as a brother, neither is it as a friend. I love you more than all that and,” He brought a hand up to wipe at the single tear that had unknowingly escaped the younger’s eyes. “I was hoping you’d feel the same.”
Donghae felt more tears coming up as his heart burst with emotions surging forth at the last statement. He didn’t know what to say except to feel the urge to crush the man before him into his arms, and so he did. He rejoiced in Hangeng’s confession as he half sob, half laughed. Hearing that, Hangeng laughed with him.
“I don’t feel the same.”
Hangeng felt his smile drop immediately no matter how hard he tried not to, and untangled from their arms. He looked at Donghae with a solemn expression, his mouth opening and closing, trying to form audible words.
Donghae almost wanted to brawl out in laughter looking at his flustered demeanor. “I feel more that what you’re feeling.” He beamed when he saw Hangeng’s face light up. “I love you more.”
Yes, we both understood.
