I’m gay. I’m gay. I’m gay. I’m gay. I’m gay.

Hyukjae tried to shake off the mantra in his head. Why wouldn’t that voice get out of his head? Or better still, why wouldn’t the face of the person telling him that just hours ago get out of his head?

The lanky man let out a deep growl and flopped down onto his bed. Arms widespread, laying in supine, Hyukjae stared up into the white of his ceiling. He breathed deeply to calm his racing heart. His racing heart… Why was his heart beating so fast? Hyukjae blinked.

He shot up in his bed when the door of his room suddenly creaked. “Donghae?” The other man was in his pajama, Hyukjae could see that. But, why was he still up so late in the night? “Aren’t you supposed to be sleeping already?”

“Hyukkie ah, I-I can’t go to sleep. I need to know what you think.” Donghae replied meekly as he sat on the edge of the other’s bed.

“What I think?” Hyukjae feigned innocence even though he knew exactly what Donghae was talking about.

The smaller man said nothing, just stared through wide and bright eyes at the other man. He knew if he doesn’t clarify today, he’ll never get the chance to, because Hyukjae would just be avoiding him once tonight is over. He was quite sure of that.

Hyukjae broke the eye contact with Donghae. He couldn’t look him in the eye and not think about the confession he’d just made. He’s gay, for goodness sake, Donghae’s gay. The man, his best friend whom he’d fallen in love with over the years, is telling him now that he’s gay. A flutter began at the pit of his stomach and spread to the rest of his body. Hyukjae looked down at his hands playing with each other, and cleared his throat. “O-okay.”

“Okay?” Donghae strained his head to look at the other man who had his face turned downwards. “That’s all? After telling you that I’m gay, all I’m getting is an ‘okay’?” Donghae doesn’t know to feel happy that Hyukjae was not despising him or disappointed because he was expecting more than just a word ‘okay’.

The room was silent, save for the sound of the air conditioner howling above their heads, signifying its existence.

“All right, fine. Thanks for not looking down on me despite my confession. Good night.” Donghae muttered, finished, and got up, walking past the still silent man without hesitating or looking back.

“Wait-“

A voice caught the smaller man in his tracks as he neared the door and he stopped.

There was a sigh. “I-I’m gay too.”

That was when Donghae widened his eyes and stood frozen, unsure of how to react. Hyukjae’s gay too? How would he react then if Donghae told him he likes him?

“What?”

Hyukjae finally looked up and peered through his long lashes at the man who’d moved in front of him, now on one of his knees. “I’m gay too. And I’m in love with you.”

Donghae widened his eyes.

“Way before the day, when you saved me from my stepfather, who came to school that day to look for me so that he could take me back to that pigsty house of his after my mum’s death. Way before the day, when you pleaded with your mum to take me in so that I could have a shelter over my head. Ever since the day you took my hand and told me you wouldn’t mind being friends with me when all the others were mocking and looking down on me… I knew, I was in love with you and you were my pillar of strength.”

Hyukjae was too caught up in his memories that he hadn’t felt salty saline sliding down his cheeks. It was only when a warm hand that came up to wipe away the acidic trail of tears, did he realise that he was crying. The other man was crying too as he knelt on both knees in front of him, holding both Hyukjae’s chilly hands in his warm ones.

Donghae kissed each palm softly and wiped his own tears from his eyes. “Guess what?” He whispered and straightened. He leaned close until they were looking into each other’s eyes, until his breath ghosted over Hyukjae’s lips, until he was breathing in the mint in the other’s breath. Hyukjae hiccupped and he smiled. “I’m in love with you too.”

Donghae cupped Hyukjae’s face in both his hands, holding him delicately in his palms. He reached upward so that he could kiss his eyelids. “Way before the day, when I saved you from your stepfather...” He kissed his other eyelid. “Way before the day, when I pleaded with my mum...” Donghae moved down further to kiss the tip of Hyukjae’s nose. “Ever since the day you smiled at me the first time we met… I knew I was in love… with you.” He ended the last word with a lingering kiss on the other’s lips. Eyes closed, it never felt this peaceful between the two men before.

The kiss was sweet and Hyukjae felt the butterflies fluttering around his heart. Opening his eyes when the soft kiss ended, he gazed up at the smiling man.

“I have some confessions I need to make.” Donghae said softly.

Hyukjae felt his chin wobble at the love shining in the other’s eyes. Never had he felt love, until Donghae came into his life. Hyukjae’s mother had remarried when he was younger and his stepfather had abused him, repeatedly, with beatings and sometimes even beastly enough to use him to satisfy his sexual needs. While his mother would be out all day earning all she can for the family. No one cared for him. No one wanted to be friends with him. But there was Donghae, Donghae and his family, who came along and brought him love and hope.

“Lee Hyukjae, I’m gay…” Donghae brushed his thumbs under the eyes of the other man to wipe away freshly shed tears. “… and I’m in love with you. Will you take me as your boyfriend?”

Hyukjae half laughed, half sobbed at the question. He felt his heart bursting, exploding with love for the man before him. “I do… I do, and I’m gay too.”

Donghae laughed at Hyukjae’s timely confession and pounced on him so that he toppled both of them onto the bed. “Ah, I love you so much.” He grinned as he snuggled against the chest beneath him, arms wrapped around the slim waist of the other.

Hyukjae tucked Donghae’s head under his chin and brought him closer. He sighed contentedly. The air conditioner was still howling. He looked around. Yeap, this was still his room. He looked downwards, this man… The man in his arms was still the Lee Donghae Hyukjae loved right from the start. But there was one thing that was different now.

Lee Donghae loves him too.
