It is the first really hot day of this summer in Pittsburgh and for the first time in his life, Justin Taylor wishes school to last longer.
The building of St James Academy is equipped with finest technology, including an air conditioner, which makes the school a very pleasant place to spend time, at least on hot days. Talking teachers then become just a rather disturbing addition to the scenery. Justin never cares about listening to the teacher anyway, especially when he is busy drawing his classmates or when all he wants to do is to sleep because Brian has kept him awake till who knows when.
Stepping out into the sun is a shock and the way back through half the city is pure torture.
It is only half an hour past noon and most people try to walk wherever they can enjoy at least a little bit of shadow, so Justin has the choice between a sidewalk full of people and a sidewalk with no protection whatsoever from the burning sun.
The advantage of shadow finally wins over claustrophobia, but even with the direct sun gone, it is incredible hot.
Justin tries to remember when it has ever been so warm in Pittsburgh, but fails miserably.
Damn global warming.
He toys with the idea of looking for a shadowy place somewhere in the city to pass the afternoon, but he is expected “home” when Brian returns from work, and Justin has no idea when this is going to be, so he decides to wait in the loft.
After what feels like hours he finally arrives and the first thing he does, even before having a shower, is to search for the air conditioner. The huge loft has about every technical thing you could possibly need and not need for your comfort, so of course there has to be such an essential item.
Justin tries to remember whether Brian has ever used it, but he only recalls that the temperature in the loft has always been pleasant. He really should pay more attention to how this loft works. After all, he lives here, too.
Opening the windows wide is not an option because it is warmer outside than inside, even though there is not much of a difference, really. Justin draws the curtains close instead and decides he desperately needs to find that air conditioner.
Several minutes pass before Justin takes a closer look at this huge computer thing that works the alarm system. This console somehow controls everything technical that happens in the loft, Justin remembers.
He tries to find “air conditioner” somewhere in this mess of pushbuttons and options, but it seems too complex. How on earth does Brian get anything done with this?
The only really easy option is the one that controls the alarm system, with other words, the only important option. Then why does Brian even have this massive and surely expensive thing? Oh. Of course. He is Brian Kinney. That’s why.
Still, Justin decides, you can really overdo “high tech“, and he steps back before he accidentally switches on the heating or something.
Right now, all Justin wants is to have a never-ending shower. Or, at least, a shower he does not have to leave before the sun goes down and takes the heat with it or before Brian comes home and gets this stupid air conditioner to work.
Justin takes a bottle of Evian out of the fridge, drinks most of it and then heads for the shower.
Just as he finishes undressing, he can hear the door open. Apparently, Brian cannot be bothered to work in this heat, either.
Does his office building have an air conditioner? Oh, surely. And his Jeep does, too. Still, the long way through the city must have been really horrible for Brian, too. He will deal with the air conditioner right away. And immediately afterwards, he will want a nice, cool shower.
With a smile, Justin puts on the water.
