It sounds like you handled the situation really well. I'm impressed, especially since you've never experienced it before. And don't feel too bad about forgetting some of the details. There's actually a very good physiological reason for it. When we're anxious and our bodies are flooded with adrenaline, it gives us an energy boost (rapid heart beat, dilated eyes, sharper senses etc.) for that moment, but it interferes with proper memory storage and later retrieval. It's kind of similar to why people say that if you panic and cram study the night people, you'll suck on the test because the panic (anxiety) makes you forget everything the next day.
Anyway, I totally agree with your rule - nothing is worth more than health and safety.
