(Just pondering to myself here) Hm... is this the Indian she's supposed to meet? The one from her apparently prophetic dream? I'm curious as to how long she and Paul Peter dated. He seems quite protective of her, but is he just being a typical jealous drunk, as Despina wondered, or does he really still have feelings for her when she obviously doesn't harbor them for him any longer.

I never gave any thought to that question. In a strange environment, I think he's feeling protective of a White woman. A chivalry many males feel for an unattached female, maybe prior to the prevalence of women's lib? Their family upbringing and situations would definitely be conservative socially (not necessarily politically), religious, and middle class.

They are more adventurous and well-educated than their parents, who would have felt more liberated and cosmopolitan than their parents. On either coast, they'd be seen as repressed or dull, or worse.
