folk school gossip

So there's a woman here that I really dislike. We'll call her "M." M is the business manager, and she does a lot of things that make me disgusted and mad. From switching the school to a new bank because there was a lot of money offered (and putting their ad in the catalog--the first time there's EVER been an ad in there) to being rude to locals ( Read more... )

The only thing I'd suggest about M -- not knowing her myself -- is that a lot of what you don't like about her is probably a function of her job. She's being paid to be the business manager, so she relates to the school like a business, with a bottom line (hence allowing advertising) and an image to maintain (not wanting the dining hall to feel like a dorm cafeteria). As for being rude to locals, it certainly doesn't speak well of her, but the school doesn't make money off locals, so it's not like she has much incentive to make them like her. The people whose opinions she's concerned with are the wealthy donors and the non-local students who pay full tuition. It stinks, but that's capitalism.

On the up side, at least she gets paid to worry about all that stuff, so you don't have to! That place couldn't exist if everyone was thinking about the bottom line all the time -- the school's spirit would be gone.

P.S. We just hired a new student named Brady -- I feel so weird every time I say "Hey, Brady." :)

Thanks for the rational words. I know you're right, and most of the time I it doesn't bother me that much. It's just that every so often she does something particularly offensive that sticks in my craw. There's an astounding amount of gossip here, and I've been struggling with not joining in (as in, I keep joining in). I'm looking forward to getting away for the wedding for a weekend. Perspective, please!

P.S. You should just tell Brady what we do: "hey, dog."

In my experience, Business Managers do suck. I suggest that you drown your angst in a large bag of chocolate chips. I love you--hang in there and remember to find joy whenever and wherever possible.

Mmm, chocolate. My current problem is that I'm out of good peanut butter to eat with them-- the kitchen forgot to do the fun order this past month. One more week till good food!

Let's talk soon. I bet you can call me before I call you. ^_^

Damn, the age old peanut butter dilemma. Well, ´twill soon be rectified. I would love to talk, but I am in Europe without a telephone, and the international rates here are tantamount to highway robbery. Possibly I will have some skype access in France, but our conversation may have to wait a month or so until I´m back Stateside.
¿How is/was your chair making class?
