My exciting Saturday night!

I know this is all I seem to talk about lately, but I'm totally consumed with money and budgeting and thinking about my financial future right now. For the past few weekends I've been spending my time reading Gail Vaz-Oxlade's blog and website and basically obsessing over getting myself debt-free ( Read more... )

Yay for getting out of debt! That's pretty much the only reason I'm getting a job. We've dug ourselves into a pretty deep hole of debt, so we're working on a payment plan using 90% of my income to pay it off in 8 months (plus what we were already paying). It's SO HARD to live without a credit card!

We've found the most success by using cash for everything we can use it for. Groceries, fun money, pets, etc. It really helps us to stick to our budget instead of being like "oh, well it's okay that we are $25 over our grocery limit". We keep the cash in envelopes.

It really IS hard to live without the credit card. I can't believe how reliant I was on it before! I know it's not a big deal to use it if you can pay off the balance each month, and once upon a time, that was me. But it's way too easy to get in the trap of, "It's only 25 bucks" because it all adds up so quickly!

I was thinking about doing envelopes too, but for now I'm just keeping all my cash in my wallet and being mindful of how much money I have for each category. But I think I'll go for the envelopes if I start forgetting what belongs where! It helps so much to have the money right there in front of you!

Isn't your interiew today? If you haven't already gone, GOOD LUCK! You'll do great!!

Money sucks but it's awesome you're starting to really take control of you finances. It'll make yourself feel better in the long run!

I hope everything is going good, I know the feeling with the hot holiday. Apparently we don't even get paid for the first MONTH meaning I still won't have any income until January. So we'll see how things go. We can always try doing the spontaneous, last minute hot holiday purchase and see how that goes... :P

Yeah, it's hard to be "good" now but I have to keep reminding myself that I'll be more comfortable later. I'm also trying to realize that I don't "deserve" things... it's either I can afford them, or I can't. And right now I can't, so I just have to suck it up. :P

Honestly, the last-minute purchase thing would probably end up being way cheaper (albeit scary, if we can't find anything). I guess we can talk about it more when December rolls around.

you are partially right about the last minute thing...but also it could really blow up in our faces too. yes there are lots of great last minute deals to take advantage of...but there are also thousands of other canadians who are taking advantage of them too....so we could end up missing out entirely because we waited too long. for me, personally, i'm not into the idea of waiting until last minute. i'd like to know by december-ish that this is actually going to happen so i can decide if i'm going to put in a time off request or if i can save it for later on in the year and do a longer or bigger trip with some additional money i have saved. i know it's a lot to ask from minna because of a large amount of job uncertainty, but i do think we should talk about it come december ( ... )
