What does this word mean to you? For a description of what it means to me...

Okay, so you know how in the United States we play "rock, paper scissors" to decide who will go first, or who will go last, or who has to go down to the kitchen to get the heath bar crunch ice cream?

so you can see why I was so confused when I saw it in this email. I first processed it as English first. Then I said it kind of outloud but in my head, and I figured it out!

is cachipún the game where they wave their hand back and forth (sort of palm up, palm down, palm up, palm down) and sing a song and then see which way their hand ends up when the song ends? my students used to do that to figure out who would go first for class activities.

which makes me think about how when we kept score they would make the hash marks in the shape of a box with a diagonal line inside. instead of 4 in a line with a diagonal like in the us. and don't even get me started about flipping a coin!

cachipún seems to just be rock, paper scissors. I don't know about that hand thing. I will have to do some research. Likewise on the tallying, and coin flipping... where do I live? Did you ever get the instructions for how to play dados for your brother? Which it turns out is called cacho. Like everything in Chile. Cachai?

yes, i did get the instructions. as i remember, dados is a little different than cacho. but i'm not positive about that. too bad i don't have a web cam for the hand thing because you'd probably recognize it if you saw it...i'm doing it right now...

well, not really. I think maybe I have an idea, but I will have to check with someone that teaches teens, or ask diabla_traviesa the next time I see her.
