Prologue
- Kyuhyun -

It was on a clear, sunny Monday that this story started to take place. The sky was blue as it could possibly be and the air was crisp with the smell of fresh sunshine. Kyuhyun didn't understand why it had to be so fucking happy, especially on a stupid Monday. Monday was supposed to be the day where it rained like hell and had thunderstorms brawling across the sky, where everyone was supposed to be dead and moaning like the zombies on his newest game of Starcraft.

But then again, this was real life, not Kyuhyun's video games, and the world hated him with a large passion. Kyuhyun buried his head in his hands, thankful that the first maths period was finally over and he had two free periods right now instead. They had erratic hours of school that none of the seniors could keep up with, forget the one-year-early freshman Kyuhyun.

The dark-haired teen groaned into his arms as he felt a weight press onto his back. There was a light laugh. “You're such a lazy ass, Kyuhyun-ah,” Sungmin said from the side, flopping into the seat next to Kyuhyun. He poked the pale boy's arm once. “Oi, are you alive?”

Kyuhyun raised his head to glare at Sungmin, uncaring that the other saw the dark circles under his eyes. “Go away,” he grunted once, flopping his head back into his arms.

Sungmin scowled. “Yah! Is that any way to talk to your hyung? Kids these days, so disrespectful,” he 'tsk'ed in a fake disappointed tone. “Did your mother teach you nothing, Kyuhyun-ah?”

“The same shit she taught you,” came the muffled and snarky answer. Sungmin laughed whole-heartedly, ignoring his dongsaeng's snark. “Oh, Kyuhyun, you forget - your mum and my mum are different people. I know that you want this thing between us to be more than just a hyung-dongsaeng relationship - ”

Sungmin was cut off unceremoniously as Kyuhyun's head shot up, his eyes glaring with full force. “You shut the fuck up,” he snarled. “And let me sleep.” But Kyuhyun's head, although wobbling along with the rest of his body, did not fall back on top of the table that they had occupied. Instead, Sungmin chuckled again with his light, airy voice.

Kyuhyun rubbed the heel of his palm into his eye, knowing that he would get no more sleep this hour. “Sungmin hyung,” he started out patiently, “What do you want?” Though Kyuhyun tried not to, his voice still came out a bit whiny.

Sungmin sniffed, insulted. “What, I can't spend a few minutes with my favourite dongsaeng? Why do you expect that I expect something of you every time I come to talk?”

Kyuhyun shot him a glare that practically screamed, 'are you fucking serious?'

The other relented with a, “Okay, I did come here for something.” Sungmin hurried on, unperturbed, as Kyuhyun's head started to lower again. “But it's worth it, I swear! Me, Jongwoon, and Ryeowook are heading over to the karaoke place today - the one that Jongwoon hyung's dad owns, yeah - and we were wondering if you wanted to come along as well. A couple of girls are coming along, and I think Ryeowook is bringing friends.”

“Why would I want to go to something like that?” Kyuhyun asked, irritated. Despite his love of singing - and his major in it - Kyuhyun would rather be at home, sleeping in bed, or even better - doing nothing all day that didn't involve socializing. He and people didn't mix well, despite how his family and Sungmin was trying to constantly change that. The only people he could say he was close to was Sungmin and his own little group of friends, all four of them as fond of singing as he was.

But Kyuhyun just wasn't comfortable around girls either. He wasn't smooth or attractive in his eyes, what with his too-pale skin and lanky figure with no muscle (other than the usual) whatsoever. He was usually quiet in his classes during primary and secondary school, so he really wasn't expecting anything now. College be damned, he was only seventeen!

“So I won't be alone,” Sungmin said. He tugged on Kyuhyun's shoulder. “Come on, Kyu! Stop being such a coach potato!”

Kyuhyun glared at him again. “I am not fat,” he snapped. Then, glumly, he continued, “Besides, I'll probably just sit there and do nothing. It's not like I have anything to say in those kind of situations.” His attention shifted back to Sungmin, his tone biting once again. “And what the hell are you going on about, being alone? You've got about ten other people there, if Ryeowook's bringing friends.”

“Stop being difficult, Kyuhyun,” Sungmin finally said after a long pause. “Just come with me, you bastard.”

“No.”

Sungmin glared. “If you don't come with me, I swear I'll tell your sister about that incident when we were ten - ”

Kyuhyun's head shot up and his back became ramrod straight. “You wouldn't,” he grit out, his eyes narrowing, teeth gritting against each other. “You promised not to tell anybody, not to even speak of it's presence!” he finished with a hiss.

Sungmin flashed him a confident smirk, crossing his arms. “So you're going, right?”

The younger twitched violently for a second, and Sungmin was just about prepared to run for his life in case Kyuhyun decided to find his inner chaser and run after him with a knife at his throat, but then he groaned and let out a defeated, “Fuck you.”

“Pick you up at six-thirty!” Sungmin laughed. “Wear something casual, and remember to bring your voice, Kyu! I better not get some lame excuse from your mom about some shit or the other about you not being there.” With a farewell punch, he let Kyuhyun bask in his lousy mood, which had just gotten lousier - because of his so called 'best friend'.

Kyuhyun closed his eyes and thought over what he had just agreed to. Then his mind flashed to a picture of him and Sungmin, seven years ago, in their backyard. And he shuddered, wondering if he had really made the right choice.

Kyuhyun would soon figure out that one little meeting would start to put his life on a never-ending roller coaster.
