I can totally fix all of these things! Seriously. It makes me all sad that LJ seems to be hating on you (I have no idea what's going on with the ads) but if you would like help, I have various solutions that I can offer.
I had a similar hatred for LJ when I started out, and I'm still a wee bit suspicious of Twitter, but for the most part, it seems these things get better. I promise.
E, you are a gift straight from the Gods. Have I told you that recently? I have become down with Twitter (mostly) but that was due to a lot of hand-holding. If you are willing to provide hand-holding in an LJ capacity, I believe maybe I will one day form a tentative, somewhat begrudging respect for it.

Okay, I think the ad thing should be sorted and if it's not, then I might just have to write someone a sternly worded letter (which I'm very good at, y'know, just as some completely useless trivia).
As for layouts, I got mine from here - and they have some pretty easy step by step instructions as to how they work and you don't even have to understand codes and such. It getss rid of the orange! They don't involve nice pictures of B&B, but as a reformed html nerd, I could totally work that out... I think? I used these before I had a paid account, which are secretly handy and let you do cool stuff like that.
My favourite little trick to navigating friends pages is to stalk the 'friends of friends' page - yours being here because it doesn't just pic up the people you've been able to add, but almost everyone else in the fandom, which is handy. You have to sift through some other stuff on occasion, but I generally just find that even more shiny and interesting

Okay, a lot of my userpics (which you can have a look at here) have either come from this journal or this journal. I'm not particularly passionate about them, so I'm not one to look overly hard - I just make a point of saving ones that I find pretty.
When you find ones you like, right click and save them somewhere handy on your computer - you then upload them here. Choose the upload from file option, find the file on your computer. The keyword field when you're uploading should be some name that you can identify the userpic with (you choose which pic to use when you comment from a selection that you might have uploaded, from a drop down menu that just has these various 'names', so make it something memorable). The comments field is where you credit whomever you snagged the userpic from, and I generally just enter "from person" and be done with it.

I think I've got it... maybe? How does this look? I can't tell if it's been credited properly because it only shows up in text form on my screen... perhaps you could check and let me know before I upload all the ones I saved?
