Asking the Oracle: Pots and pans

So, I could use some help finding skillets (aka frying pans). I really really don't like nonstick pans. I hate worrying about scratching it, I hate hate hate the fact that you have to throw them out after a while (I have a definite difficulty buying things that won't last for a really long time), I'm concerned about the long term health effects of ( Read more... )

The Lehmen's Non-Electric Catalogue that we have here in the Green Room has some that are cast iron (the Lodge, but not the preseasoned Logic varieties).

has both Logic (preseasoned) and original (not seasoned) for $10-30 each depending on the size.

I really don't like the way that cooking fats (I usually use olive oil or butter) behave in it. They just sort of sit in little pools, which is not what I expect them to do.
Yes, exactly! One of the many reasons I prefer to use cast iron. Or a steel pan with an aluminum core (not non-stick in the slightest, but still a good material for some things).
The other reason I like cast iron is because my frying pans can double as baking pans.

Sadly, I have no clue where to get not-preseasoned cast iron around here. I'm currently using cast iron pans that are, as far as I know, older than I am. Sorry I can't be actually helpful.

(I've seen a bunch of places with un-seasoned Lodge cast iron pans online, but I assume that the shipping is, er, a not insignificant cost. Maybe I am wrong.)

Cast iron ware! Love it! Of course, mine is from the grandmother of an ex, which isn't very helpful to you.

Personally, I would try ebay, or craigslist. Old cast iron ware is great with some reseasoning and a little love. ;)

we picked up the third cast iron skillet in our house at the MIT Furniture Exchange, I think; that is to say, check Goodwill and other sources of used cookware for old regularly-seasoned cast iron. alternatively, ask your grandma.
