It's not his place to be leader anymore, not here when they're in Korea. Unlike Leeteuk, whom he looks up to, who is leader all the time with no break in between, in Korea, Han Geng can relax and be one of thirteen instead of the leader of seven.
Still, the skills that he's learned in his first year don't just die in the interim. He's always been aware of the other member's feelings. But this is a little different. Attentiveness doesn't just go away. And neither do things that start in China.
He would have to be blind not to notice Kyuhyun's furtive glances to the right every time they line up as if expecting someone to be there. ”Hi, Kui Xian!” 84 hours since he last saw him and counting... Never mind that he is here, in Korea. He's just not here when he wants him to be. The cost of convenience.
Because Han Geng knows when Kyuhyun breaks down, it's never when it's convenient. Not when the cameras are off, when they're in the apartments and he's warm and loved by every member. It's when his heart painfully hammers against his chest the most and when he thinks they're not looking.
Han Geng opens his jacket and Kyuhyun immediately falls into him, hands curling and wiggling their way under his coat, seeking a warmth Han Geng can't truly give. They're all cold, but Kyuhyun is nearly numb to the touch and bordering on crashing on his shoulder.
“Soon,” he whispers, squeezing life back into him as best as he can. “You'll see him soon.” He isn't lying. A few more shots, a few more hours of lip-syncing their latest love song to the camera, a few more costume changes and dance choreography. It won't be long. “Soon.”
He speaks in whatever language comes out first. (The familiar taste of home on his tongue says its Mandarin.)
