Fan Fiction and Me

I have always had a morbid fascination with fan fiction, because they're like rorshach tests. This is especially true with Legend of Zelda FanFic, because it's Campbellian simplicity (until recently) makes it a blank slate which people placed their values and neuroses on. When someone writes fan fiction, it's like having a guided tour of their mind

Zelda's not simple anymore?

Other than the nicer 3D graphics, Twilight Princess was still a pretty dang simple, fable-like story. Likewise with Phantom Hourglass and, as far as I know, Spirit Tracks.

I mean, sure, in Twilight Princess link now has quicktime-event combat comboes and can do fantastic attacks God-of-War style... but there's still no blood in the game, the enemies just poof into clouds of purple smoke when you defeat them. You still are fighting Ganon, still have to gather the triforce pieces, find the sages and restore the Master Sword's power, and save the Princess.

Incidentally, if you haven't played TP, you really need to, because it's beautiful. It swallowed an entire week of my life and I don't regret a moment of it.

I'm not complaining, it's that while it has maintained it's fable-like story, Twilight Princess has gotten meatier story-wise than past games. I actually like the turn the latest game has had since it allows for more characterization. This was an improvement because now, you understand why he is doing the things that he does.
