So this year was my 5th Otakuthon. I've been going since it started in 2006 when it was free and you were wandering the halls of Concordia University. I've seen Otakuthon grow from a wannabe-con at its beginnings to this huge convention that finally earned its name. They were very well organized this year, I was impressed!
Before going this year though, I really wasn't into it at all. As the years have gone by, anime got replaced by dramas and Japanese bands which recently got replaced by my bands from here. So this year, before going, I felt like I had wasted my money because i don't go to panels, i don't go to screenings and i don't buy anything anymore. Basically, i'm paying 35$ to wander around. And to be honest, a lot of the fans annoy me because they're really loud and hyper x 1000 when together at a con.
I was thinking of picking up my badge and selling it in the lineup but friends convinced me to go. And i am so happy they did.
First of all, being there made me realize that even though I'm not into it that much anymore, anime was still a big part of my life for a long time and it will always have a place in my heart. It was also great to be able to see some friends I originally met through Otakuthon one way or another and that I don't get to see very often. I missed them more than I thought and I also realized i've made a lot of friends through this con <3 I'm very grateful for that :)
Seeing all those cosplays made me feel like an outcast because I wasn't cosplaying haha I don't take many pictures of cosplays anymore but it was still nice seeing all of them! I think I might cosplay next year, if my budget allows me to. I wanted to cosplay Chihiro but didn't have the time nor the money. I need to find a Haku though...
Now for my day-to-day report :)
Day 1: Friday
Friday was just my badge pick-up day. My friend and I got there towards 6pm so the lineup had died down, which was great because i remember in the past, it took hours to get your badge. Saw some cool cosplays, browsed around the dealers (but i told myself i wouldn't spend this year) and just hung out with friends. I don't think i really did anything that day. Still, just bumping into some old friends all the time made me really happy I went already <3 I went to eat at a buffet at 11pm with some old high school friends <3
OH. And i went to see this show called J-Music in Motion, which was kind of a dance/singing show and my friends were in it! it was pretty good :)
Day 2: Saturday
Saturday is usually THE day. Lots of stuff to do, to see...I arrived there at around 11 with my friend and we split. I went straight to the Fullmetal Alchemist Voice Actors Q&A. This year at Otakuthon, we were lucky enough to have Vic Mignogna (Edward Elric), Caitlin Glass (Winry Rockbell) and Aaron Dismuke (Alphonse Elric) as guests, among many others.
This panel was awesome. Vic and Caitlin were hilarious and Aaron was just adorable <3 ahah I absolutely loved it. You can find the whole thing (from different pointns of view too) on Youtube but I found two of my favorite stories here:
