Cell phone cases: condoms or plastic on the upholstery?

Are they a reasonable safety precaution, or are they an aesthetically disturbing and needless interposition between you and your phone?

I just got a Droid, and immediately went to get a case, but wondered if I'm being overprotective.

I use a black leather one for my Razr ... like it's wearing a little gimp mask.

Got an answer to this to a fellow trainee who bought one, so I asked him. He finds cases to be a pain, so his primary recomendation is a back holster with a clip. He showed me his, and it clips in and out really easily.

If you don't care for a holster (hate 'em myself), a case isn't entirely necessary - they're very durable, with very tough screens. It still will pick up the usual dings and such over time, though, and of course will get scratched if you tend to toss it in a pocket with keys - dunno of any phone that won't, really. If you want to keep it pristine, the rec (again, from the guy who dislikes cases) is invisible shields.

Hope this is helpful!
