I'm curious about charger plates. I have used chargers, but they were made of a plastic-y material that we got at Pier 1 or something like that. They were uneven on the bottom and the charger plates (and anything on them) rocked. Not good.
Are they used to protect the table from a hot plate? Or are they purely decorative. The pictured charger looks like it's made of beaten metal.
That's my silver-plate charger that we have. It's 100 years old, and I'm catching up fast...LOL. It's Rogers Bros "Heraldic" pattern, the same as our silverware that belonged to John's grandmother in San Francisco. She bought it at (I think) Shreves. Anyway, I scored 2 of these on EBay a few years ago. They are purely decorative, and make sure that there is always a plate in front of the diners, until the main course, or dessert, depending on what social rules are in vogue.

I have white chargers that I tend to use when serving soup.
