A child was huddled in a solitary corner of the large foyer with her arms curled around her knees as she watched the Machoke move in and out of the front door with furniture. Awaiting her father's return, she became bored with her new home quickly and had come to dislike it because of the events preceding the move itself. Her mother had left the family and her father wished to get as far from their old home as possible.
Mossdeep City wasn't exactly Chloe's idea of a home. Everything was so cold and foreign since her mother's departure. She'd never lived near the ocean, let alone an island, and their neighbors hadn't said a word since their arrival. Unlike her first home, it was humid and warm here. She missed the crisp, frigid air that surrounded the morning skies of Verdanturf.
Sighing, she hopped off of the box and pattered outside, curious to see what the pathetic island had to offer her. The ocean was clearly visible from her yard and frightened her because of its sheer size. It seemed to stretch on forever. Wingull hovered just above the rolling waves and soared along the vivid rays of the afternoon sun. The sight becalmed Chloe's fear and she sat in the grass to observe the waters further.
"There you are, Chloe."
Ashton, her father, stood only a few feet away with another man beside him. Her father had spoken of an old friend living in the island, and that was why he chose this location. He seemed like the friendly sort, smiling down at Chloe and laughing when she shuffled around the grass to meet her father.
Grabbing onto her father's hand, Chloe murmured, "Who's that, daddy?"
"This is my friend, Jacob Walker." Ashton replied as he pulled his daughter around to greet their neighbor. With a gentle huff, he continued, "He lives next door."
"You're just about my son's age." Jacob spoke quietly and beckoned the girl closer. He knelt down beside her and added with another chuckle, "He'll be along later. Maybe you two could play together sometime."
After an hour of reminiscing and tales of friendship between the two men, Chloe was sent outside to explore the island because the movers were busy unloading the last bit of furniture that went to the upper level of the house. It was like a punishment for the girl; she still didn't like her new home.
Strolling along the shoreline, Chloe kicked at the dirt beneath her sandals and glanced around. Nothing particularly piqued her interest so she became determined to study something native to the island. She stopped and focused her attention on the island's greenery. Verdanturf, her old home, was famous for its lush vegetation, and she hadn't fallen out of admiring such plant life.
Mossdeep's trees were what caught her eye firsthand; poking up out of the ground like ringed fingers, they were certainly different from anything she'd seen in Verdanturf. She approached one of the trees and stared up into its gnarled branches, searching for any signs of life within.
"Whoa!" A voice rang out from one of the higher branches suddenly, startling Chloe. She backed away from the tree, but continued to observe it carefully. A young boy with wild, blonde hair leapt out of the tree and rolled onto the ground in front of her. Wobbling to his feet, he noticed that she had been standing there the entire time and laughed, "What?"
"You scared me." Chloe replied curtly and stepped away from him.
"I didn't mean to." He mumbled and cocked his head to the side, studying her likeness. She didn't seem familiar, so he asked, "Did you just move in?"
Chloe was taken aback by his odd question, and it prompted her to believe the worst: This boy was probably Jacob's son. He looked a great deal like his father, blonde hair and green eyes. His energy level was much higher than his father's, and he seemed to be more outgoing.
"Are you Mr. Jacob's son?" She queried in return.
"Then you are the new kid!" He exclaimed, thrusting his little fists onto his sides and grinning. He waited for a couple of minutes, expecting Chloe to introduce herself. Unfortunately, silence was all she offered him. Frowning, the boy took a step forward and leaned over to whisper, "What's your name?"
"Chloe." She answered timidly.
"Chloe, huh?" The boy said as he scratched his chin and circled around her backside to clap a hand onto her shoulder playfully. His smile widened as he continued, "I'm Jackie!"
Chloe nodded slightly, slowly becoming accustomed to his rowdy nature. It was a little unnerving but somehow refreshing. He was a welcome element to an otherwise dull afternoon.
Jackie pulled her along the path and chattered about his family, how excited he was to have a new playmate, and how great the fishing was on the island. Chloe admired his laughter, genuine and hearty; she couldn't help but giggle herself.
Maybe moving to Mossdeep wasn't so bad after all.
