Snow fell heavily around the Launcher mansion, only adding to the lonely atmosphere that had blanketed it since the family's patriarch disappeared a month ago. This left the family's only heir and child to inherit the estate and title of adventurer, thirteen year old Mag. He was seated on the green sofa in the living room with an ocarina clutched between his small hands. It was a daily ritual he'd taken up; staring at the ocarina his father gave to him as a child.

"I miss you, dad." He whispered and brought the instrument close to his lips. He tightly shut his eyes, dwelling on fonder memories, and proceeded to play the song his father had taught him. He had forgotten how to cry, and was glad of the fact. It always gave him such a headache and made his eyes all itchy afterward.

A few minutes into Mag's solo, a soft knock came at the front door, pulling him out of his trance. The Launcher residence hadn't seen visitors for quite a while, and it certainly aroused his curiosity. Calling out to his caretaker, Mag got up to answer the door, "Don't worry, Gre; I'll get it!"

Gre Nade, an older gentleman, had been with the Launcher family for generations as a butler. He also acted as Mag's legal guardian since his father's disappearance. He stood at the top of the stairs and intently watched the house's young master approach the door.

"Perhaps I should, young master. It could be one of those despicable debt collectors." He said in a stately voice and descended the stairs. His narrow eyes reflected the concern underlying his tone.

"Aw, you worry too much, Gre." Mag replied with a stiff chuckle and gripped the door knob. Swallowing hard, he twisted the knob and cracked the door open. He shrieked as the unprecedented visitor tumbled through the entryway and knocked him onto the floor.

It was a young girl.

"Young master Mag!" Gre shouted and rushed across the room to where Mag and the girl lay. He knelt beside them and studied the strange girl for a moment. She was completely unarmed and in a terrible state of anxiety as she struggled to catch her breath.

"A-are you okay?" Mag asked the girl as he sat up and held her against him. She was taller than him, but it made little difference. He kept a steady arm around her waist and lifted her frail form onto the sofa. Dazed, his eyes wandered over her body in an attempt to realize her.

The girl spoke nary a word. She seemed frightened.

"I'll fetch a blanket and some cocoa." Gre bowed slightly and left the room.

"I won't hurt you." Mag approached the couch again and took the girl's hand into his own. He frowned; her fingers were like ice. He rubbed her hands between his in an attempt to warm her. Smiling, he added, "Gre will be back soon. So, what were you doing out there all alone? It's dangerous in a blizzard like this."

Reaching upward, the girl pulled a crumpled sheet of paper out from her sleeve. Thrusting it into Mag's face, she silently urged him to read the message therein.

"Gre!" Mag hollered suddenly.

The butler responded almost instantly, and was at Mag's side in a flash. He was given the peculiar note and his heart skipped a beat upon reading it. He glanced down at Mag hopefully and then back at the mysterious girl.

"Linear, is that your name?" Mag asked her suddenly, clamping his hands over hers ever tighter.

She nodded slightly.

"Do you know what this means, young master?" Gre exclaimed from behind.

Mag grinned and wrapped the blanket Gre had brought around their new family member. The letter that Linear carried was from his missing father, Asroc Launcher, so he had to be alive somewhere. Patting Linear on the shoulder, he declared, "Welcome home, Linear!"
