Take You Out

Feb 08, 2005 20:40

Tonight, Diogo brings you a very special LiveJournal entry: The Grammy Entry! In this entry I will go over a few of the categories that just seem to keep getting worse and worse every year. I promise I'll try to stay serious--actually, no, I don't.
Oh, and this took me like a day to write, so please read it.

Song of the Year
Kanye West - "Jesus Walks"
John Mayer - "Daughters"
Tim McGraw - "Live Like You Were Dying"
Hoobastank - "The Reason"
Alicia Keys - "If I Ain't Got You"

You call these "songs of the year"? It's as if Kanye West didn't have any competition at all; but considering the Grammys are partially based on popularity, he probably will.
Who Should Win: Kanye West - "Jesus Walks"

Record of the Year
Usher featuring Lil Jon and Ludacris - "Yeah!"
Ray Charles and Norah Jones - "Here We Go Again"
The Black Eyed Peas - "Let's Get It Started"
Green Day - "American Idiot"
Los Lonely Boys - "Heaven"

Meh, that Usher song is as repetitive as Britney Spears' career.
Who Should Win: Green Day - "American Idiot"

Album of the Year
Ray Charles and Friends - Genius Loves Company
Kanye West - The College Dropout
Alicia Keys - The Diary of Alicia Keys
Green Day - American Idiot
Usher - Confessions

WHAT THE FUCK??? No Brian Wilson? You gotta be kidding. Honestly, I don't see any of these deserving Album of the Year (okay, maybe Ray Charles), but hey, it's the Grammys.
Who Should Win: Ray Charles and Friends - Genius Loves Company

Best New Artist
Joss Stone
Maroon 5
Gretchen Wilson
Los Lonely Boys
Kanye West

No Franz Ferdinand? No Killers? What the hell are those Grammy people smoking? Seriously. Maroon 5? Bah.
Who Should Win: Kanye West

Best Rock Album
Elvis Costello and the Imposters - The Delivery Man
Hoobastank - The Reason
The Killers - Hot Fuss
Velvet Revolver - Contraband
Green Day - American Idiot

Now just what the hell is Hoobastank, one of the corniest bands of all time, doing here? Man, those Grammy people are really pushing it. At least all the other artists are good.
Who Should Win: Elvis Costello and the Imposters - The Delivery Man

Best Rap Album
Nelly - Suit
LL Cool J - The DEFinition
Kanye West - The College Dropout
Beastie Boys - To the 5 Boroughs
Jay-Z - The Black Album

Surprisingly enough, relevant rap still exists. Kanye West and Jay-Z might've done great jobs with their introductions and farewells (respectively), but those three crazy guys totally kicked ass.
Who Should Win: Beastie Boys - To the 5 Boroughs

Best Rap Song
Snoop Dogg featuring the Neptunes - "Drop It Like It's Hot"
The Black Eyed Peas - "Hey Mama"
Jay-Z - "99 Problems"
The Black Eyed Peas - "Let's Get It Started"
Kanye West - "Jesus Walks"

The Black Eyed Peas are rap? And they get nominated twice? Wha...?
Who Should Win: Jay-Z - "99 Problems"

Best Alternative-Music Album
Franz Ferdinand - Franz Ferdinand
Wilco - A Ghost Is Born
Bjork - Medulla
Modest Mouse - Good News for People Who Love Bad News
PJ Harvey - Uh Huh Her

Okay, this makes a little more sense. But, uh, what makes the Killers rock and Franz Ferdinand alternative music? Those two bands are very much alike.
Who Should Win: Wilco - A Ghost Is Born

Best Hard-Rock Performance
Incubus - "Megalomaniac"
Metallica - "Some Kind of Monster"
Nickelback - "Feelin' Way Too Damn Good"
Slipknot - "Duality"
Velvet Revolver - "Slither"

Calling these songs the best hard-rock performances of 2004 is almost sad, especially with Nickelback and Slipknot there.
Who Should Win: Velvet Revolver - "Slither"

Best Rock Song
Modest Mouse - "Float On"
The Killers - "Somebody Told Me"
Velvet Revolver - "Fall to Pieces"
U2 - "Vertigo"
Green Day - "American Idiot"

The funny part is, the best song of the five here is arguably the most popular.
Who Should Win: Modest Mouse - "Float On"

Best R&B Song
Prince - "Call My Name"
Alicia Keys - "You Don't Know My Name"
Usher featuring Lil Jon and Ludacris - "Yeah!"
Usher featuring Alicia Keys - "My Boo"
Usher - "Burn"

I don't think they could've made it easier for Usher and Alicia Keys. Talk about spoiled. How boring.
Who Should Win: Prince - "Call My Name"

Artists That Should Be Here...But Aren't
Sure, you saw some decent (even good) artists here, but at the same time you saw people like Tim McGraw, Hoobastank, Maroon 5, Nickelback, and Slipknot. By now, you should be thinking to yourself, "Man, there must be stuff better than this shit, right?
How come I don't see it in the lists?" Well, I can answer your first question, but not the second one. There are better artists that somehow were not nominated. Here are some of them:
-Aerosmith
-Eric Clapton
-The Cure
-Handsome Boy Modeling School
-Jimmy Eat World
-Kelis
-Nelly McKay
-Mos Def
-Northern State
-Phish
-R.E.M.
-Scissor Sisters
-Brian Wilson
