☼ TWENTY 8☼ [action // audio]

The sun sits in the sky later in the summer, even in the City, but this late hour finds the forest to be a black just shy of pitch, tinged with oil blues and blanket soft greens. Amidst the shadow play, moonlight spangles down like bare feet that barely brush through leaves and grass on the silent ground below. Depending on how far an individual ( Read more... )

Each of the passing festivities behind his birthday had been a blur. Harry hadn't smiled-nor had he allowed himself to smile-that much in some time, the casual ease felt with the feeling of his godfather there, Remus there, and all of his friends made him happy. Though there is the sometimes felt loss of the other Weasleys and classmates from Hogwarts, he truly has everyone he needs there (despite his longing for a family, he feels this is quite adequate). Hermione and Ron are his best friends, Luna a close one, and Ginny the red-headed girl who had a way of challenging him and keeping him on his toes. Remus and Sirius went without words, of course, the remnants of a past, something that Harry himself desperately wished to hold on to (needed to hold on to). He doesn't think of expeditions to the clock as he eats the cake from Claire Bennet. Peace, a lack of trouble-these things were allowed to find him. It was his birthday, after all ( ... )

A familiar sound echoes toward her and she knows who it is without looking up, before he says a word. It reminds her of something, the same way it reminded her of something that first time near creatures only they could see at that time. Many more can see them now from his point in time, and this is neither good nor bad--just the truth. What that something is, even Luna has not yet put a name to. Maybe she never will, settled enough with what it tells her to go on its curiously impressive track record without an explanation that would fit in a textbook ( ... )

In a way, it's so similar to that day, when she was young and seeking her mother, and Harry found his heart hurting as he made false promises that he couldn't keep-that Luna, in her own way, was able to understand came out of kindness and nothing more. She isn't young now, hasn't been for some time, but he sometimes finds himself haunted by the simplicity and maturity of that girl. It's as if she hasn't changed, but has changed so much. He wonders if it would be different, if he noticed her a bit earlier; things like that are hard to tell, and he's glad for what he has, and will never let it slip away.

It's an understanding. It's timeless and yet not, still evolving as he finds her uncomfortable truths to become more comfortable, as he recognizes her eccentricities as interesting parts of her character. His relationship with Luna is not like Hermione and Ron's connection, nor is it like the others; it's unique in its own way. Not surprising, either, he thinks-she can't be anything but unique ( ... )

When he steps closer, she brightens a little, though it might be difficult to tell at this hour, shadows tilting across them like the seconds, and as he lowers himself beside her, she glances away because they are friends and this sharing of space can be appreciated best by recognizing the feeling of not being alone, not just seeing that someone else is there. Luna doesn't feel old or young and she's not entirely sure as to why, never having asked herself that question. Part of her has a certainty that once she felt very, very young, though whether that was before her mother died or directly after, it's too distorted to say. Better, she often feels and always believes, to glow than dim, with the gold and silver of friends unexpected and a war that ends, as all wars do--as everything does ( ... )

Karolina knows that going deep into the woods by herself is a stupid thing to do. She knows this, but she doesn't care. It's easier to be alone with her thoughts here, just them and the insistent ticking that comes only when she's alone. It's annoying, to say the least, but it's better than Gert's orders for her to 'stop being the resident emo' or Chase's 'don't worry about it'. Things like that are easy for them to say. Though both have had some losses in their lives, neither one of them had to deal with the losses turning into gains turning into losses again ( ... )

"Hello, Karolina," she smiles through her voice in softer tones, not even turning around to see who it is, because she has a tendency to pay keen attention to who speaks to her and when and why even if she does not compartmentalize all of these things. They all register and they all serve to help cement people into her consciousness, allowing her to remember them more easily. Having not expected company, she waits another second or ten before glancing back over her shoulder, hair pooling over it like a waterfall of palest gold.

"Those who have passed on," is the simultaneously blunt but no less quiet and calm reply, even and steady, as if to say those we cannot reach but still strive to hold our hand.

Something I'd do well to remember--or try, at least--in the future.

[ a long pause ]

None of the others are really awake at this hour. Might I join you, Luna?

Maybe it's something that you can't explain, a feeling more than a thought.
