Yeah...it was a real guy's skull, he donated it and he wanted it to be used in Hamlet. But apparently David let it slip that it was a real skull and the RSC decided it would be too distracting if they kept on using it.

Frankly, I would have just told people that and then kept on using his skull. I mean, if it was his last wish, I'd feel like I'd have to honor it. *shrugs* But that's just me.
