There is no talking between them as she moves forward with ease towards the unmoving man lying amidst the swaying grass.
It’s an unspoken agreement between the two - an agreement that feels almost magical, because from the first moment they both set foot in that clearing at the same time, there was a magnetic pull. Without ever uttering more than a few necessary words to each other every now and then, there’s an understanding between them that here, during this allotted time, the deeds they have committed in their life and the bonds that tie them down are nonexistent.
It should’ve never happened.
That stormy May afternoon when they both set foot in the same clearing on opposite sides, she was supposed to do the dutiful thing and attempt to kill him, to rid the world of a great evil. He, in turn, was supposed to return the favour and rid the world - his world - of one of Konoha’s most prized ANBU.
But instead of killer intent and malice, peace and calmness filled them at the sight of the other, and they were drawn in. Unwillingly at first - she to the man who forever ruined the life of a most beloved teammate, and he to the woman who had singlehandedly foiled many of his organization’s carefully plotted plans.
It is something beyond their explaining, and eventually, they surrendered and accepted the fact that for people who live the life of a shinobi, peace is hard to come by. Fate, for whatever unexplainable reason, chose to give them the peace she isn’t quite sure they deserve.
Settling herself down next to Itachi, she finds her favourite position under his outstretched arms - and together, they watch the sun set below the mass of trees. By now, they are familiar with the presence of the other - but only under these circumstances. If they were to face off in a battle elsewhere, she is sure he will pay her no mercy and kill her without hesitation, and she is sure to return the favour.
But here in the magical clearing that is theirs only, the outside world is forgotten for the few hours every odd weekend, and they are just two people that Fate decided to string together.
