Luna smiled prettily, despite it all.

To the others, there was nothing amiss that wasn’t usually amiss with the eccentric woman. The dazed look that accompanied her at all times was present, and her aura of absolute insanity and mysterious knowledge was there as well. Even Hermione, who she considered a good friend, discovered nothing amiss.

“Luna!” the brunette gasped. “You look fantastic today!”

Luna knew it, but she gave no hint of her own awareness, offering Hermione an airy nod. “Your dress is lovely as well, Hermione.”

Hermione smiled back, unaware that inside Luna’s heart and mind, all hell was breaking loose. “Thanks! Excuse me now though, I have to go. Draco’s becoming childishly impatient.”

Hermione walked away then, towards the blond man standing a little ways away. Luna watched as Draco said something to the brunette with a scowl, to which Hermione responded with a charming laugh and little slap to his arm. Luna was still watching when Draco’s scowl turned into a smirk as he pulled Hermione tight towards him, and a thousand watt smile lit up Hermione’s face.

So that is what happiness looks like, Luna mused in her mind as she glided around the reception area. Around the green grass and white décor, she caught sight of many old school mates and current colleagues. Some even came over to converse lightly with her before moving on to the next set of people. But Luna’s mind was far away, her airy gray eyes transfixed on a bouquet of white roses.

Whites roses. White roses. White roses.

He blushed, stammering as if he was twelve again.

“For you,” he said, looking away and shoving a bouquet at her simultaneously.

Luna couldn’t help that her smile broadened upon seeing his antics, and she stretched out a hand to take the bouquet from him gingerly. “White roses? Don’t people usually give red roses on Valentine’s day?”

At this, the adorable blush on his face deepened three shades. “Yeah…But I thought this would suit you better, you know?”

Luna couldn’t help but laugh. “Yes. Thank you, Neville. They’re wonderful.”

It was tradition, after that, for white roses to be exchanged between the two of them. Looking at the plethora of white roses around her, at his wedding to her - it was more than betrayal. An overwhelming urge to Incendio the bouquet simply to watch it burn overcame her. Luna walked away briskly, nothing like her usual ethereal pace to the nearest non-floral area. It wouldn’t do to set Neville’s wedding on fire.

“Luna?”

Luna’s heart froze. She would be able to recognize that voice anywhere. Steeling herself, she turned around with her usual smile. “Neville! This is a lovely wedding.”

He blushed. “Ahh…thank you. It’s uhm, fantastic to see you. When did you get here?”

“A little while ago.”

Before Neville could answer, his blushing bride appeared. Hannah beamed at Luna, unaware of the tension between her fiancé and the blonde. “Luna! It’s wonderful to see you again! How long has it been - six years?”

Luna nodded. “I think so, yes.”

Hannah nodded back enthusiastically, chattering on about whatever popped into her mind. As she talked, Luna chanced to meet Neville’s eyes, and in them, she found everything she’d hoped to never find. Looking into his eyes, she found the same happiness that had been reflected in Hermione’s. Happiness that couldn’t be faked. Happiness she knew she had ye to find, or more accurately, had lost.

Luna’s smile changed then, nostalgia mixing itself in. She gave Neville a little nod, and with that one little gesture, they both knew everything was over for good. Hannah proceeded to drag Neville away to their net set of guests, and Luna turned away, towards her own future. With every step she took, her heart trembled and shattered, until she reached the edge of the wedding grounds, and there was nothing left of her broken, lonely heart.
