Six year old Ino smiled down at the odd-haired girl. Even odder than her hair colour was the fact that she was currently bawling her eyes out, in the middle of a field of daisies no less. Ino crouched down next to the girl, still smiling.
“Hey, what’s wrong?”
The girl jerked suddenly, as if surprised by the blonde. She blinked a few times to register Ino’s presence, and Ino couldn’t help but coo at the lovely shade of green in her eyes, now shining with tears. Even after staring, the girl didn’t answer. But Ino was not so easily deterred.
“My name’s Yamanaka Ino. Why are you crying by yourself in this field?”
The girl kept staring, as if Ino had grown five heads. Not just two, mind you, but five. Suddenly, she hiccupped, and she covered her mouth immediately, embarrassed.
Ino smiled. “What’s your name?”
This time, she answered, even if it was only a whisper. Ino had to strain her ears to hear the quiet “Haruno Sakura”. Ino’s smile widened.
“That’s awesome! Just like your hair!”
Sakura nodded hesitantly, and Ino took that as a cue to continue talking. Ino had a habit of talking incessantly - her mother often joked about it, and her father often grumbled about it, but Ino didn’t care one bit. Eventually, after chattering about all that was on her mind, Ino slyly asked again why Sakura was crying. Now that Sakura was more accustomed to the blonde’s presence, she answered timidly, “all the other kids make fun of me because of my forehead.”
Ino actually looked appalled in that moment, as she assured Sakura that she was a very pretty girl, adding jokingly that Sakura was only second to herself. When Sakura didn’t look convinced, Ino made up her mind about something.
“Let’s be best friends, Sakura,” Ino said. “And we’ll protect each other. I won’t let any of those stupid girls make fun of you again.”
Sakura stared up at the confident, pretty girl declaring an offer of friendship. Something like this had never happened before, and for the first time in months, she smiled as broadly as she could.
“It’s a promise, then!”
Both girls beamed at each other as they intertwined their pinkies, linking together their lives forever.

Sakura sighed, brushing the memory from her mind. It was that time of year again, and if she remembered correctly, that day. Twelve years later, Sakura suddenly missed that blonde bundle of sunshine that had saved her. Of course, given their current rivalry, Sakura would never admit that she owed so much to Ino, but she wanted to. She was sick and tired of their little feud, and at the very least, she missed Ino. Sure, she had plenty of friends and colleagues now that she considered good friends, but no one could upstage the presence that Ino had established in her heart.
It was a bitter realization, and Sakura heaved a bitter laugh to go with it. Occupied as she was with her thoughts, she failed to notice that her feet had taken her to that place, their daisy field. She tried her best to avoid this particular part of Konoha, and had definitely taken care to avoid this place on this day on previous years. But now that she was here, she decided that staying for a while wouldn’t do her much harm.
When she reached the middle of the field, she dropped down to the ground, until she was stretched out flat amongst the flowers. It was no use to keep the regret off her face, where no one could see her. Her eyes fluttered shut, until the sun was just a shadow behind her lids.
And that was how Ino found her, looking every bit as sorry as Ino had ever seen her. Sakura must have felt her presence, but said nothing as Ino dropped down next to her, lying down in the same fashion.
“Hey, stranger,” the blonde murmured.
Sakura said nothing.
“What are you doing lying by yourself in a field?”
Ino closed her eyes too, enjoying the light breeze on her face. When Sakura finally spoke, Ino was so surprised her cyan orbs opened of their own accord.
“Reminiscing,” Sakura started. “And perhaps regretting.”
Ino paused for a moment, before replying, “I think…me too.”
Sakura chuckled despite herself, and twisted her head slightly to look at Ino. “What happened to us?”
They share a look, before both say simultaneously in the same tone, “Sasuke.”
Sakura turned her head back after a little laugh, gaze returning to the shapeless clouds. “For what it’s worth, I’m sorry.”
Ino was still looking away when she echoed the sentiment. “Me too, Forehead. You don’t know how much.”
Suddenly Sakura sat up, so quick that Ino was quite startled. Slowly, deliberately, Ino followed suite. Sakura looked excited for some reason or another, confusing Ino slightly.
“Is it too late, Pig?” Sakura asked rather forcefully, suddenly.
“I don’t know.”
It was the truthful answer, and it rendered both of them thoughtful for a moment, before Ino spoke again. “But hell, it never hurts to try.”
Sakura smiled then, hearing traces of her old friend in that one blunt statement. Without thinking too much of it, she gathered the blonde up in a hug, expressing all the lost friendship of the past twelve years.
“Damn straight it never hurts to try.”
Both girls laughed at that, and it was as if they were both six again.
