“What on earth is going on?” Casey hisses out, half embarrassed at her state of undress but mostly just pissed off.

“I don’t know!” Sarah, her roommate shrieks back. Sarah is in an even more unfortunate state of undress, with just a slim robe covering her body. Around them, more students pour out of the few entrances, most bleary with sleep and in odd garments. Casey shivers when another gust of autumn air pushes through the crowd, and she sees many around her do the same.

Which asshole pulled the fire alarm? is the question she wants to scream into the crowd. But that would probably only serve to drain her own strength, and just as she lets out a resigned sigh, something catches her attention from her peripheral.

Or rather, someone catches her attention.

Surprisingly, he looks just as confused, sleepy, and pissed off as she is. Disregarding the fact that it is nearly two in the morning on a Tuesday night, some part of her dozed brain had thought that Derek would be still up and having a blast with his pals. But seeing him, so oddly reformed (if that was even the right word) appeases her mind somewhat, and she settles for just settling her anger within.

Just as she is about to turn her gaze away, he catches it, and she thinks she sees his eyes light up a fraction. Then she sobers up; why would his eyes light up to see her? It is probably just the product of her imagination and overworked, fatigued brain. She blows out a sigh and turns away.

But suddenly he is moving towards her, pushing through the crowd, dispersing the people blocking his way, creating a block-free path towards her. He squeezes his way through so quickly that she doesn’t have time to react, and suddenly he’s right before her, something undecipherable in his familiar eyes.

“You okay?” he asks, and his voice sounds full of concern, but Casey doesn’t trust her judgement one bit. She can only nod meekly, and he takes that as a sign of worry, because the Casey he knows doesn’t do meek. It’s as if he notices her thin garment for the first time, and without the slightest moment of hesitation, slips out of his oversized Queen’s sweater and puts Casey into it. His movements are so quick that she doesn’t even have a chance to protest, and once she recovers enough, it’s so warm that she doesn’t want to protest.

The thank you is on the tip of her tongue when she sees Derek shiver in his T-shirt and pyjama pants, and it’s her turn to worry. She moves to remove the sweater, but her movements are too slow, because before she even gets one arm off, he’s put his hand on it, telling her to stop.

In a fit of insanity or something else entirely, Casey decides the only way to solve the problem is to throw her arms around Derek, engulfing the both of them in the warmth of his sweater.

Around them, people continue to panic and yell, the atmosphere a mixture annoyance and fatigue, but Casey stops noticing, stops caring. She buries her face into his chest until she’s nearly invisible, and he buries his into her hair. They seem like the only immobile things in the crowd, but it doesn’t matter, not at all.

Like this, it’s as if nothing will ever change.
