She imagined a garden of crystals and white roses, of snowflakes that drifted like petals, warm and not melting. It was a child’s dream, a place of warmth and safety that would shield her, a sanctuary for her love. It was never meant to be a reflection of reality, of what she would one day have. That would be the final wisps of a dream, teasing her, but always inches away from reality.

But now?

Hermione could barely breathe as she took in the scene surrounding her, the environment that all but enveloped her. “What-” she gasped, as she reached out tender fingers to gather a wayward flake. “What - why - how did you know?”

“You told me once. Long ago,” he paused, as if uncertain for a moment. “It was unintentional, I think.”

“Draco, I-” she faltered, at a complete loss for words. “I don’t know wh-”

“Shh,” he hushed her with a sole finger to her chapped lips. “Words were never meant for this place. It’s your haven.”

There was such sincerity in his claim that all doubt flew from her mind as she threw her arms around him, placing a light, chaste kiss on his lips. “Draco…thank you.”

Hermione untangled herself from him, and took one tentative step forwards into her gift. The first step was onto a cloud, the next a waltz across water, and every step after a climb into heaven. It was beyond surreal, all the white and purity that surrounded her, after the bloodied past they had left behind. It was like a rebirth, the way the sheer chastity of the garden engulfed her, cleansing her from the inside and out. Hermione swivelled around, the white of her dress blending in with the endless white of the background. The dazzling smile she wore was enough to make his stomach dive, even after all this time.

“Happy birthday, love.”

A ringing laugh was her only response as she bent over to pick up a wayward rose, kissing the blossom before blowing it off into the cloud of falling petals. There was a radiance that surrounded her, almost as if she glowed in the white haven he’d created. Every ounce of doubt he’d harboured while creating the place dissipated as he watched her waltz through the garden, smile widening with every step.

Let the white of this garden wash away the bleeding wounds of the war.
