Jaime blinked a swollen eye up at the night sky. For days, the stormy weather had allowed for only turbulent splotches of sky to be visible, even at night, The dark patches of gray against black had been never ending for days on end.

It did nothing for Jaime’s sinking hopes, aching stump and yearning heart. It dashed all of the above into oblivion, until nearly nothing remained in his mind and heart but the icy darkness and gloominess that surrounded them in every direction.

His companions save for the oaf on guard were all snoring away, even the Lady Stark’s wench of a knight. Jaime cast a cursory glance at her, and the sight of her blonde strands, dirty as they were reminded Jaime once more of his twin. Cersei’s beautiful flowing golden locks were nothing like the Tarth woman’s butch, wayward strands, but once reminded of Cersei Jaime could think of little else.

How long had it been since he had last been with his sister?

Too long, Jaime thought. The thought alone seemed to weigh the darkness on him even more, and he could feel himself struggling to grasp at the last few fading strands of hope that he still clung to. He knew the thoughts that followed this train of thinking would end in nothing but desolation, and in an effort to rid his mind of such darkness, Jaime chanced to look up at the sky. The moon would at least be visible.

Just as he turned his eyes up towards the sky though, a trailing line of glowing light streaked through the sky, illuminating the otherwise gloomy night. It sparkled for the moment that it shone before it disappeared from his sight, towards another destination too far for his eyes to see.

Jaime was far from a sentimentalist, but he was hard pressed to explain away the slight burst of hope that reignited within him at the sight of the star. It reminded him, briefly, of the only other time he had seen such a sight in his lifetime. Barely ten years of age, sitting in the gardens back at Casterly Rock with Cersei - hands entwined - they had viewed the same spectacle. She had oohed and aahed at the sight, but Jaime had only been mildly impressed, and had all but forgotten about the star the very next day.

Seeing another one now of all times had to mean something. For the first time since they’d sawed off his most important asset, Jaime felt the will to live on burn fiercely through him.
