She’d always known that a love like theirs was bound to incur the wrath of gods. Of what gods, she knew not, but she was sure that some type of divine retribution was in the cards for them. Sometimes she thought that it was unfair, so entirely unfair that circumstances were always against them. From the very beginning, they were destined to doom, to failure and to all obstacles beyond their control.

Slytherin and Gryffindor. Pureblood and Mudblood. Light and Dark.

Hermione stopped herself there. Superficial labels, all superficial, she reminded herself. None of those things were important - they were all just labels that society had slapped on them. That was all. She ignored the annoying voice of truth in her head that urged that it was not those things that made their love worthy of punishment. It was the betrayal of their beliefs that it embodied that broke Hermione’s heart. She knew that being with him stood for a betrayal of everything she believed in. If any of her loved ones, anyone on her side knew, her life would shatter, the pieces scattered into limbo.

Everything she’d ever put her faith and all her heart into contradicted everything he’d ever stood for, yet…Draco was oddly different. The superficial layers, the ones that made him contrast so starkly from her, they weren’t him. They were what he was bound to be, by duty and by heritage. When they were together, nothing else mattered in the world and all of that other stuff simply melted away. It was a selfish notion, she knew, but who could fault her for wanting a little of what every person craved, especially at a time like this, when the apocalypse seemed imminent?

Draco was oddly soft, despite his tough and worn exterior. He was her comfort, her reality and her saviour. Hermione had found that with every passing day, the war weighed heavier and heavier on her. Sometimes, she felt as if she would sink into the ground for all the weight on her person. And she was sure that she would have by now, if not for Draco. Most days, he didn’t even need to say anything. His presence was enough, because she knew that he understood. It was enough to lift the weight off her shoulders, even if temporarily, and propel her into the heavens for a few sweet moments of blissful recluse. Without him, she would be but a shell of a person, which made this taboo all the more heartbreaking to her.

When, and not if, her friends and family discovered their secret the sky would come crashing down in a tsunami of anger and hell on the two of them. Even knowing this, she couldn’t give him up - not her one means of escape, the one person she’d come to care so deeply for that he felt like an extension of her soul. But it was okay. She’d accepted that as part of the bargain. Even if being with Draco meant the wrath of the universe, it was worth it.
