Sakura smiled weakly at the ocean in front of her. There was a certain peace to the seaside. It felt as if she- no, they could be away from the shadow of their lives. Here, they were not Akatsuki, and she was not Haruno Sakura, and he was not Uchiha Itachi. They were simply just there- just one of the many couples sprawled on the sandy beach.
And she wished that it could always be perfect like that. But when her lungs started to burn and contract again, she knew that it was not meant to be. Pale, thin fingers clutched the Uchiha’s arms as the coughing fit started, forcing the pinkette to curl tightly into his embrace.
Itachi’s hold tightened on the frail woman in his arms as she continued to cough, some of her life fluids mixed with the dry air. It was frustrating. He could kill most with the blink of an eye, and was almost invincible. But he was helpless as he watched his lover cough over and over again. This thing, this disease was just simply there, and taking a bit of her life every second.
His eyes snapped down to her when the shaking stopped. Pale green eyes stared up at him, and he couldn’t help but be taken back again. This girl never ceased to surprise him. He knew that she knew her days were almost up, and yet, her eyes held no despair, no fear. Just acceptance and...happiness.
“Itachi...” she croaked, throat still sore from excessive coughing. “Take me closer to the water, please?”
His lips formed a thin line, but obliged nonetheless at seeing her small smile. Inwardly, the pink-haired woman revelled in his embrace. She knew her days were limited; a week or two, or maybe even three, but that was stretching it. And truly, she couldn’t be happier. She had gotten all she ever wanted, after all.
When she was six, her father had taken her to this seaside town. The sparkling ocean and its waves took her breath away even at such a young age. And she knew that this place was it. Salvation, and maybe a bit more. And now, at twenty-six, with the man that she loved with more than her heart, back at that place, there was no other way to feel but happy.
Because even if she left before him, they both knew she would be waiting on the other side.
