Every night, she stares into the sunset, hoping for the same thing, knowing that her hoping is futile.
Sitting atop the highest point in Konoha - above the Third’s head - has slowly become a daily habit for the pinkette. Like Kakashi’s daily visits to the memorial at the crack of dawn, Sakura finds herself drawn to the same place every evening, watching the sun set below the horizon.
She didn’t know what she was looking for; if she was looking for anything at all. But every night, she would be alone with the fiery red sun, and her mind would whirl away to a place she longed for, yet couldn’t stand. She would drift away, soulless and powerless to dreams that haunt her, and memories that plague her.
Once upon a time, they used to be happy memories and hopeful dreams. Seven years ago, after being left on the stone bench she can’t go near anymore - little bits of her hopeful dream chipped away, unnoticed to her. Then two years and three attempts on her life by him later, the once happy memories were replaced by bloody, heart-broken nightmares.
And at some point, her already battered mind snapped, and she was broken (she didn’t know anything anymore, but somehow, she was sure - she was broken for good this time). She doesn’t find comfort and solace in anything anymore; everything reminds her of him, and it’s the only thing her mind will recognize.
Warning signals, and the only thing she can do is lock herself up and get away from it all (and she knew, along with her memories, her mind was slipping away slowly as well).
She used to watch the sunset from her bedroom window; but she was drawn to the Hokage Mountain, where she could see the sunset perfectly. The sunset was the only thing that wasn’t a warning signal, so she embraced it. There, she feels as if she’s on top of the world, and she can see everything.
Including the genin aged Team 7 strolling atop the looming Konoha walls. She doesn’t question it - just revels in the moment, and every day, a new wave of hope washes through her.
And she leaves, hopeful - somehow willing her broken mind to believe that dreams will become reality.
