Title: Birthday Present
Fandom, characters: Yami no Matsui, Oriya and Muraki
Rating: PG

Note: A tiny gift for someone who made such a little fuss about her birthday that none of us knew. And really, she deserves a very big fuss made over her. Happy birthday, olympia_m! You made me try my hand at YnM! *runs away before Muraki can kill her*

Finally, the guests were gone and he could relax. It had been a nice party, with some nice gifts, nice food, and nice company, but he was glad it was done with for another year. He sat on the porch and looked up at the stars, the smoke from his pipe making patterns across the Milky Way.

"You look like a fat lazy cat after consuming a large bowl of cream."

The voice came from the shadows but he could never mistake it.

"I wasn't expecting you."

"Are you ever?"

"I suppose not. But there's usually a possibility in the back of my mind, and today there was none. My abilities must be failing."

"You've just become complacent. You need me around for the chaos I introduce, and lately I've been elsewhere."

"Is that what you're good for? I've often wondered."

The other settled down on the porch near him, and they sat in companionable silence for a while.

"I brought you a gift. Two, actually."

He shifted a bit, uncomfortable. "I'm not sure I want to know."

"Oh you'll enjoy these. Here is the first." Muraki pulled a slim but elongated box from within his white suit coat.

Oriya opened it cautiously. With Muraki, that was the only way to open gifts. This one turned out to be harmless but unexpected.

"A tie. With little human hearts bleeding across it. How... you."

A smirk appeared on the face across from him. "I thought so. I designed it myself. And after I had two printed, one for each of us, I destroyed the pattern and killed the printer, so we have the only two copies."

He choked on his words. "How thoughtful of you. But I can only be grateful that no more exist."

"I knew you would appreciate that."

They fell into another period of quiet, Oriya playing with the silk tie, running it over and around his fingers. He was curious about the other gift, but not about it to ask. That would only encourage Muraki. Besides, he knew he wouldn't have to wait long by the way the other was shifting impatiently.

"You're not going to ask, are you?"

"No."

"You spoil all my fun."

"I ignore your fun. There's a difference."

"Not much of one, for someone who craves attention. Sometimes I wonder why I haven't killed you."

"Because you need a safe haven."

"I could find a house anywhere that would suit."

"I wasn't talking about your rooms."

"I know. You were being maudlin. Sometimes I think you are to me what a grandmother must be to normal children."

"How flattering. Thank you for reminding me of old age on my birthday."

Muraki shrugged it off. "It's nothing really."

He didn't bother explaining that he really wasn't grateful. But he did finally give in. "Your other gift, what is it?" And he was rewarded with a pleased smile.

"I thought of what you wanted, and I'm giving it to you."

He felt no little fear at the words. From one who walked the paths of insanity, such a thing could mean anything. He was cautious in his response. "And what might that be?"

"My brother."

He sat up straight. "I don't want him!"

"Well no, who would?"

"I don't understand."

"I've decided not to try again."

He stared. Muraki's obsession had defined him for so long, he wondered if the man would start to fade into the surroundings.

"You're not doing this because of me."

"No. I have my own reasons. But I thought it would make you happy."

He relaxed, surprised to find himself genuinely pleased. "It does. It's a splendid birthday present, Kazutaka. Thank you." He pulled his hair back and tied it with the necktie. "That deserves a drink. Will you join me?"

Muraki looked at him critically. "That clashes with your robes."

Oriya smiled. "Isn't that what chaos is all about?"

Muraki laughed at that. Maybe Oriya was only reading what he wanted to into it, but the laugh seemed a little less manic than usual.

And that, he thought as they went inside, is a birthday present I'll keep to myself.
