[Not fic] Just a few words to think on...

Aug 27, 2013 14:40

I saw something today in the VF fandom that made me want to cry. It wasn't on the YA or Sion community, but on another fan site, directed at specific fans. I feel the need the post this publicly on the chance that the person who wrote it will read this, and perhaps think before posting something like that again ( Read more... )

Your comment was totally calm and respectful and I think that wouldn't inspire a wank under any circumstances (or that's what I'd like to believe ( ... )

Such misogyny is not found only in the fanfic community, unfortunately. A relatively well-known female reviewer of M/M books is on record as stating that so much as a side-couple with one trans character is enough to disqualify a book from being "true" M/M (no matter how much or how little attention that side-couple is given, compared to the main M/M pairing), or that having ANY expression of an M/F relationship (sex implied or on-page, M/M/F ménage, mention of the het side of a bisexual male character, and so on) in an M/M book is point-blank disrespect to the readers. So, that review you found most definitely doesn't exist in a vaccuum: female readers' hatred towards fictional female characters (and especially fictional female body parts) runs VERY strong all over the slash fandom / M/M readership :/

All that said...

Especially a review that threatened all out war against any further stories like it.Oh really? *grins evilly* As you might have noticed, my Muse has been on strike for many months now, but I desperately need something ( ... )

Sadly that even msture ones do it. It is probably the same MM reviewer that inspired Voinov for posting in his GR blog. I wonder, if these mysoginic females have daughters, would they hate them too?

Indeed, it was that same reviewer. Aleks had a VERY nasty discussion with her >.< She triggered the hell out of many trans readers/writers (including me), but in the end she concluded that we were all nasty bullies who were out to lynch her for no reason =_=

I wonder, if these mysoginic females have daughters, would they hate them too?

I don't think so, because I don't think they hate RL women. That reviewer, for example, kept repeating that she was only talking about M/M *books*, not RL trans people, without ever understanding that there's an obvious and clear link between the two (especially when discussing with a trans author of M/M books O.o !) These women are cool with other RL women; it's just fictional female characters (and most especially their genitals) which they don't want to see hanging around their precious fictional male characters.

Your post was so beautifully said, with such care for everyone's point of view! I hope the angry poster reads this, and thinks twice before spewing more hurtful vitriol. And I hope the person who's story was bashed ~ and their fans ~ reads this too.

I totally agree with your comment. The world, people and ideas are not able to fit into a neat little bubble no matter what anyone thinks. I always encourage my readers to let me know if something I've written isn't their cup of tea. A few people have told me their opinions and it leads to meaningful discussions between both of us about the topic and I always encourage them not to be afraid to tell me their minds ( ... )
