I can imagine why women would feel so vulnerable; I know at least a couple of my friends who have experienced date/aquaintence rape. Despite all of the sensationalist new coverage that more lurid rapist attacks get, the fact is that stranger rape is the exception, rather than the norm. The vast majority of women (and male victims, to be fair) know their attackers before the rape or sexual assault occurs.
The closest I've ever come to being maced (not that mace is legal for civilians to carry in the UK unless you have approval from the Secretary of State) was when I got thrown bodily out of a mosh pit at a Goth Club and landed on a girl's foot. As I came to my senses (or some decent approximation thereof) she started yelling at me and kicking me repeatedly with very pointy shoes despite me clearly not being in any way responsible for how Newtons' Laws of Motion apply in this universe.
