Summary: Night means more than dark hours for Sungmin and Kyuhyun.
Night was Sungmin’s favorite thing. The sun started to set, giving place to the moon reappear; dark blue substituting light blue, stars normally standing out in the sky’s immensity. At those times, wherever Sungmin was, a smile spread across his face: soon he’d be home.
At night is when he’s able to hide from everything and everyone, forget all about his worries and unpleasant events that occurred during the day. At night he can bury himself in the sheets, cover himself up with the blankets and empty his mind, locking completely the world outside.
Sungmin is not alone when this so precious hour of his comes. At night Sungmin is always with Kyuhyun. As soon as Kyuhyun comes home he tiptoes into their shared bedroom and into Sungmin’s bed, sneaking in between the sheets with him. It doesn’t matter if it’s a cold or warm night, Kyuhyun would always be lying right beside Sungmin.
The moon’s brightness penetrates the room, barely lighting it but bathing their skins in its silver pallor. They lay there staring at each other’s eyes, contemplating their features leisurely. Kyuhyun likes to observe how Sungmin’s long lashes touch his cheeks when he closes his eyes, how his lips form a pout without any effort, how his dark silky hair is spread across the pillow they share. Sungmin likes to observe Kyuhyun’s little mark situated under his right eye, he likes to get lost in those chocolate irises and in his lazy smile. Sungmin and Kyuhyun relax after a day full of activities; they find peace and tangible happiness in each other’s presence while their fingers travel through body parts.
“You’re too good for me,” Kyuhyun whispers in one of those nights, caressing Sungmin’s cheek, and a smile full of affection forms on his face.
“Eh?” Sungmin gives him a confused look together with a playful smile.
Kyuhyun closes his eyes for a few seconds, taking a deep breath and absorbing Sungmin’s perfume scent impregnated in the sheets, in the pillow, in his shirt.
“You’re too good for me,” He repeats it, slowly opening his eyes again and tracing his fingers through Sungmin’s features: from his cheek to his nose, from his nose to his lips, from his lips to his neck.
Sungmin laughs lightly. "Why would you say that?" And his heart starts to beat faster, eager to hear Kyuhyun's explanation.
“You know I don’t deserve you,” Sungmin rolls his eyes at that, obviously annoyed with the statement. Kyuhyun continues before Sungmin has the chance to make any sort of comment. “Although you’re upset with how things went during the day, you’ll always be here smiling at me. Although we fight over stupid things, you’ll always forgive me. My constant mood swings, my rage outbreaks… At the end of the day you’ll always be here waiting for me to make everything better. You’re too special, Sungmin. You’re too good for me.”
He puts a stubborn lock of hair behind Sungmin’s pierced ear, looking into his eyes the whole time.
Sungmin feels his cheeks burn and he knows that they’re a darker shade of pink now. and he hopes Kyuhyun won’t notice it in the dark. His heart is now jumping against his chest. So that’s the way Kyuhyun sees him…
He smiles openly, his eyes involuntarily becoming smaller during the process.
“You’re too much, Kyuhyun” He plays with the younger’s now short hair while the latter gives him a questioning look. “Yes, I will be always here for you” Kyuhyun’s features relax. “No matter what happens during daylight, at night I’ll always be here to heal your wounds.”
Some owl breaks the silence, but neither Sungmin nor Kyuhyun pays attention to it. Their synchronized breathing and accelerated heart beats are the only sound they can hear, the only sound that’s important at the moment. The fondness involving them is overwhelming and it’s present in every touch, in every look. Kyuhyun’s smile can’t get any bigger as he listens to Sungmin’s words.
“Thank you,” Kyuhyun mutters, snuggling closer to the other boy and covering his lips with his own for a brief second.
Sungmin closes his eyes in delight, feeling sleep approaching and peace dominating his whole being. Kyuhyun and his velvet voice always had that effect on him.
“I love you,” Sungmin confesses, sighing afterwards.
“I love you too.”
The moon is the only witness of their confessions, the only one that holds the secret for such a serene night, as they both let themselves be carried away by unconsciousness, arms entwined and feeling more protected than they’ll ever be.
The end of the night would always come; the chaos would always be back in their lives when they wake up - the imminent stress. But everything was fine; what would come with the sunrise was not important. At the end of the day they’d have each other to lean on, and that was their favorite thing.
